Gaul vs Roma By Julius 11-2002

Post by anguille »

*1 unit is consisted of 600 men*
60BC- I, Julius Caesar, have been granted full power to conquer all the gallic tribes. I was granted the use of 4 additionnal legions whit the 6 I already had. We began marching and after 1 month, arrived in Gaul. There was 4 cities that had been ???romanized??? so that my men could rest and resupply. I sent emmisaries to the Central and Transapline gauls and they came back whit news of alliances. My emmisaries also told me that the Helvetians were quite powerful amongst the celtic clans and that if destroyed, it would surely bring a political turmoil. I decided to send a small army (4 legion, 2 archers) to attack Helvetii, the capital. When they arrived at the destination, the saw that the garrison was only consisted of old men. There was no more than 200 Helvetians to defend the capital. General Labienus attacked the capital and took it in a matter of minutes. But to is surprise, the real garrison was outside the city??™s limits doing training. They had heard the screams and were coming to retake their beloved capital. Labienus ordered an ordered counter-attack and the real battle began. The two armies were of equal forces. At first, the naked ennemy was a terrifying sight but the strong roman soldiers came to overcome their fears and slowly, the Helvetians did no more have the upperhand. Their losses were so great that they had to surrender. At the end of the day, I had lost 260 men and the Helvetians, 1600!

59BC- Whit the victory at Helvetii, the moral of my men was at all time high. I used this boost to send another contigent(4legion, 2velites) to take Tigurni. I had given the command to an inexperienced commander. When he arrived, he set uped camp instead of taking the ennemy by surprise. The Helvetians, during the night, attacked the tired army and the incompetent commander had no control over is men. It was a massacre. I lost 3600 men that nigth. The next day, the Helvetians sent an emissary whit a basket and a message. The message was writen by the Helvetians king. He wanted peace and if I refused, I would have the same fate as my commander. I opened the basket and found the head of the young commander. I accepted but with no intention of stopping my conquest. The next month, I sent anoter army to take Tigurni. This time, the commander attacked whit order in the ranks but outnumbered 10/1, lost the battle for Tigurni. But one officer found invasion papers on a dead general. The papers told about an iminent invasion of the Central gauls. I sent this paper to the king of the Central gauls and he decided to enter the war on my side. The rest of the year passed whitout incident.

58BC- Whitout notice, the Eastern gauls declared war on me and immidiatly sent a large army attack Helvetii. But at least, the Helvetians asked for peace and seing an opportunity, I accepted. O could not wage war on 2 fronts. The Eastern gauls attacked Helvetii whit such a force that the strong roman soldiers could not hold on to the stronghold. At least, the Easterns had lost a considerable amount of soldiers. The germans, to my surprise, sent a messanger that announced the entry of the war on my side. I was extremely happy but could not figure out the motive of this alliance.

57BC- Intended on retaking Helvetii, I took command of a huge army(4legion, 2spanish merc., 2cavalry) and marched to the ancient capital. I had a cunning plan for killing the Eastern gauls garrison: I sent my 2groups of cavalry to the city??™s gate and I told them to get followed by the garrison. To be sure that they would be followed, they tied heads of dead Eastern gauls on their horses. The plan worked like a charm. The Easterns came out of the city and charged the cavalry. The rest of my army was waiting, hidden in forests and bushes near the city. As the Easterns came close to those wooded areas, I ordered(trumpet) the charge. At this signal, all my men came out their hiding position and attacked the surprised gauls. The suprise attack worked like a charm. The Eastern gauls were cut down like trees. At the end of the day, 7400 Easterns were dead. I had lost only 1456 men. That night, I received a note that told me about the fall of Medriomatrici to german hands. Only 2 Eastern gaul cities were left. The next day, I took my army and attacked Sequani. The city??™s garrison got out and took position in front of us. They were outnumbered 3/1. But, they charged whit great courage and were killed whit great courage. The battle was won in 30minutes. I had lost 5 men, the Easterns, 1032 soldiers. 4 days later, a small army that was camping nearby attacked us. The battle was ferocious, heads were hacked, limbs were cutted...it was horrible. But at some point, Labienus arrived whit reinforcements and took the Easterns by surprise. They were surrounded but fought to the last man. Only one city was left to complete my revenge of the massacre at Helvetii. The city was called Lingones...

Part II
56BC- Whit only 1 city left, the Eastern gauls sent me a message asking for peace. I replied saying that I would give them peace in exchange for a tribute of slaves and goods. The Eastern gaul king, Ramirix, replied my message: ???You insolent fool, I will crush your stupid roman head whit my bare hands!???. My general, Labienus, asked me if he could take a legion and attack Lingones. I refused saying that we just had to wait and the Eastern gauls would come crying for food. The rest of the night was calm. The next day, one of my scout came riding back to me. He looked disturbed. I asked him what he had saw and he replied:???Imperator, the germans have taken Boii!???. In a way, I was relieved but I saw the real motive behind the alliance whit the germans, the had the same dream of conquest as me. But for now, they were peaceful. The Helvetians had only 2armies left. I took 6 groups of legionnaries and 2 groups of spanish mercenaries and sent them to attack a large Helvetian army near Tigurini. 2 weeks later, I received the great news that the large army had been sucessfuly destroyed but the general that I had appointed to the Legion had, against my orders, attacked Tigurini and had lost all of his men. I couldn??™t wait for my ennemies to reform so I sent a legion(4legion, 4cavalry) to Tigurini. Near the city, I deployede my men. I put the cavalry in front of my infantry. I waited for the Helvetians to come out. As I expected, they came out of the city and formed a few miles infront of my men. I ordered the cavalry to charge, the infantry would walk behind. The cavalry hit the ennemy hard but not hard enough. They had to break away for the infantry to have a fighting ground. The clash was horrible. The cavalry had done little or no damage and my legionaries were severly outnumbered 3/1. Eventhough they were outnumbered, my infantry made a great stand but after 5 hours of intense combat, they became tired. I ordered the retreat and the Helvetians didn??™t even charge the fleings because of the casualties they had. They had lost 9450 men, I had lost 5090 soldiers. The next week, I came back whit another legion(6legion, 2archers). The ennemy came out of the city as usual but this time, I didn??™t order a charge. Their king could not wait and ordered a disorganised charge. My archers poured an intense ???rain of arrows??? and killed at least half of the ennemy??™s army. But they continued and when they came into contact with my legionaries, they met a solid wall of shields. They fought and fought but sustained too many casualties and their morale dropped significantly. At some point, the Helvetian king was struck down by an arrow. At that point, the ennemy began to fall back. My legionnaries pursued them. The city surrendered. I took 10 000 slaves. The rest was left to my soldiers. I let them pillage the city because of their great work.. That night, I summoned my generals to my tent and told them about the attack of Lingones...

55BC- 1 month after the succesfull extermination of the Helvetian clan, I took 1 legion whit me and gave another to my general Labienus. We would attack the last city of the Eastern gauls. As we were walking on the road to Lingones, many peasants who were tired of the high taxes imposed by the Eastern gaul king joined our army as auxiliaries. During the time of our departure of Tigurini and the arrival at Longones, my army had grown from 12 000men to 45 000men. The Eastern gauls had only an army of 5000. When I arrived at Lingones, the ennemies closed the city??™s gate. They wanted me to make a siege. I didn??™t want a long siege so I decided to do a surprise attack. That night, about 20 legionaries climbed on top of the walls. Their mission was to open the gates. They killed the sentries and managed to open the gates whitout being noticed. They waved a torch as a signal of their sucess and I ordered the attack. 45 000 men charged into the city making as much noise as possible. The tired ennemy couldn??™t fight and surrendered whitout a fight. In one night, I had conquer a city of 60 000people. All 60 000 civilians were enslaved and sent to Rome as a sign of my success in Gaul. What was left for me to do was to gather an incredible army and throw the Germans out of Gaul...

Part III
54BC(1/2) ??“I made plans to attack the germans. I had sent spies gather as much information as possible on the german strongholds. They came back whit every detail of my 3 targets: Boii, Tulingi and Suebi. I ordered my enginers to construct scale replicas of those cities. After the completion of the models, I gathered my generals and told them my plan. As I was explaining the attack, a messenger interrupted me and told me about an important news. I listened:???General, the Belgae have broken the truce and have attacked the neutral city of Remi.??? After hearing this disturbing message, I immidiatly dispatched a legion to attack the city of Remi. As my legionnaries were marching to the city, they encountered a light resistance. It was mainly Belgae scouts. These scouts went back to the general stationned at Remi and told them of the imminent attack. The general, who was too drunk to even stand up, wouldn??™t believe the scouts and sent them away. He realized the big mistake he had made the next day when a saw a full strenght legion outside the forteress. Second mistake, he ordered an all out attack eventhough half his army was drunk our wounded. Third mistake, he putted all of his best men in the front rows and they were picked off by my archers. Then, my legionnaries killed the others. The battle lasted only 50 minutes. The next day, however, came another Belgae army intended on retaking the lost city. They outnumbered my legion and after 15 hours of combat, my legion had to retreat. The Belgae king knew better than to have a war against Roma and that??™s why, the next week, he sent a peace deal that I took. Now, I could FINNALY undertake my invasion of the germans...

Part IV
54BC(2/2) ??“Determined on kicking the germans out of Gaul, I summoned 3 legions that were at full strenght. I gave the command of these armies to 3 unexperienced generals, I had no other choice since my best generals(including Labienus) were defending the forts cities taht were precious for my invasion. I instructed the generals to atack 3 major german cities: Boii, Tulingi and Suebi. For an entire night, I explained to them what was the attack plan. The next day, they left whit their legions and went seperate ways to fullfil Roma??™s destiny. The next month, I received news from the frontlines. I had 3 letters to read. The first 2 were about the victories at Boii and Suebi. The third letter was about the defeat at Tulungi. The next week, the defeated general and what was left of his legion (680 of 6000) came back to main camp. He described that at first, they had succesfully breached the walls of the city and entered it. The soldiers were quite happy and did not follow the orders to regroup. They engage the german citizens and soldiers in the narrow streets of the stronghold. Whitout notice, an other army arrived behind their backs and attacked them. The soldiers, who were disorganised did not have the time to reform the ranks and were massacred. He and 680 others fled back. Eventhough I had lost a legion, there was still plenty left and the senate would gladly send troops to me if I asked. So I took command of my 1rst legion and went to Tulungi. 1month later, we arrived in sight of the city. I ordered my men to wait for the night. As the night fell, I sent small squads of my best soldiers to attack the breaches and try to take hold. If they did managed to hold the positions, then they could open the gates. The plan worked like a charm. They worked quickly and opened the gates. Then, I led an organised attack of the city. I left about 500 men outside the city in case we would get attacked like last time. Eventhough we fought in narrow streets, my men knew that they had to fight like a group and not go berserk. As the sun rose, the ennemy had had enoguh, the governor came to me and offered an unconditional surrender. I agreed and enslaved half the population of the city wich was sent to Roma the next day. The other half was slaughtered, tortured or robed by my legionaries. I couldn??™t just let my men go whitout a little present and also to preserve their loyalty, I had to resort to extreme mesures. The total death toll for the battle of Tulungi: romans:340 dead and 600 wounded / germans: 5000 dead. The next week, a messenger came to me whit news about Suebi, they had sucessfuly beaten back a counter attack by a german army. It seemed too good to be true, my dreams of conquest were finally taking shape...

Part V
53BC(1/3) ??“Even with the great victories, I could not rest because of the increasing threats of German armies near my borders. They were understandebly angry whit the loss of 3 cities the last year and would not sit thight and watch their country fall apart. My concerns came true whit the news from Suebi. The governor had sent me a message saying:"The Germans had gathered an army of 10 000 soldiers near our city. I was immidiatly alarmed and made preparations to counter any possible assaults. 2 days later, they attacked. They did not waste time making a siege and directly stormed the walls. Onr thing the Germans were not prepared for is that weeks prior to this attack, I had recruited over 5 000 tribal archers and they were seriously kicking arses. Before the enemy could even reach the walls, they had lost about 60% of their strenght. When they did reach it and tried to strom it, my infantry repulsed ther ladders while my archers picked them off. At the end of this attack, the Germans had lost over 7 500 men. I had only lost 20 soldiers. I believe, my general, that Suebi can hold off any future attacks." Normally, I would??™ve been trilled to hear those great news but now, this was proof that German armies were quite numerous and were on the prowl. Another concern was the relations with the Central gauls. They began to hate me. I asked them if they wanted to form an alliance with me but they refused bitterly. The next day, I received another message from Suebi. It said that 2 large German armie were approching the city and that they needed reinforcements. I sent 2 regiments of legionnaries. A month later, a message from Suebi??™s governor arrived. I opened it and it was full of great news. He had successfuly countered the 2 armies that were attacking. In 2 weeks, the Germans had lost more than 15 000 men. I realised that there was an opportunity since surely, the nearby cities of Suebi would be empty. I took a legion (4legion, 2spanish, 1auxilia) an went to Marcumaanni(german). As we were getting near the city, I sent scouts to determine the strenght of the opponents. What they saw was breathtaking, there was less than 100 soldiers inside the fort and most of the population was outside in the forest doing some religious ceremonies. I ordered a quick advance in the city and told my men to hide in the houses and stay as quiet as they could. Of course, my men took out the sentries and the ???garrison???. The citizens came back a little before dark. I waited until they were all into the city and at the sound of a trumpet, my men closed the gates behind the peasants and the rest came out of the houses. The peasants offered no resistance and the city had fallen whitout even 1 dead on the roman side. But I couldn??™t stop now...

Part VI
53BC(2/3) ??“Even with a great victory at Suebi, my men weren??™t able to get some rest because of a german army near the fallen city. It was quite large but lacked figthing experience and courage. It was supposed to attack within two days after the fall of Suebe but it attacked a week later. I had prepared my defence to meet a large but inexperienced army. I had arranged a series of traps to demoralize the advancing germans and they worked. The Germans had formed up a line in front of the city and at their commander??™s signal, they began to charge. They soon found out why my traps were called ???killing pits???. At the same time, my archers were pouring a rain of arrows at the scared Germans. After half an hour, they left the battlefield, leaving over 7000 men behind. I immidiately dispatched a courrier to send an offer of peace to the German king but he refused this generous proposition. To that rejection, I decided to take two cities. I targeted Ubii and Mediomatrici. To both, I sent a force of 4000 soldiers. I found that number reasonnable since I expected raids and suprised attacks at any time. After a week of their departure, messengers arrived shouting the fall of those two cities. I was much pleased but knowing that a counter attack was surely planned, I sent 2000 additionnal men to both towns. As I thought, the cities had been attacked but with the reinforcements that I had sent, they had managed to hold the enraged Germans off. There was 6 major German cities left to conquer. I began planning an attack on Sugambri but received news of battles at Ubii and Mediomatrici. Fortunatly, the cities had remained Roman. I continued the plans to take Sugambri. I gathered a force of 7500 soldiers and marched straight to the town. After 18 days of walking, we finally saw the walls of the city. And has strange has it may sound, the city was still undefended but this time, it was because the population had fled back to the Rhine. I positionned my men on the thick walls and gave strict orders to never fall back. The next day, a relief army consisting only of archers and javelinmen arrived near the city. Seeing that I could easily beat those Germans, I ordered and immidiate charge. Those missile troops did not stand a chance and were slaugthered. The next week, another relief army tried to retake Sugambri and again consisted only of archers and javelinmen. Like the last time, I ordered a charge and this ???relief army??? was massacred. Only five German cities left. Which one would fall first...

Part VII
53BC(3/3) ??“This long and horrible year was coming to an end...finally. Eventhough the senate was happy with my prowess, they wanted the germans out of Gaul and a passage to Spain and Britain. I demanded reinforcements but they were simply unavailable. I??™m sure Pompei was working behind my back but decided to continue my conquest with the troops I had. I ordered the constructions of additionnal fortifications around Sugambri. As the constructions began, a german army attacked. This army was mainly composed of archers and were quickly slaughtered, there was no honor killing poor peasants forced to join the army. I needed troops but most of my legions were far away. I turned myself to the gladiators. I offered them their freedom if they would fight the germans for 2years. They all agreed. I had a small army of 2500 gladiators but it would do the job. I positioned that army near a bridge north of Sugumbri. They didn??™t wait long when a rather big german army came their way. The Germans, seeing a mass of outnumbered gladiators on the other side of the shore, charged disorganised. When they got to the other side, a wall of shields and swords waited them. For 3 hours, there was figthings but soon, the germans fell back due to the heavy losses inflicted by an ???outnumbered army???. That day, I had lost only 230 men. The Germans had lost 5600soldiers. I gavwe orders to the gladiators to stay near the bridge because the chances of another attack were very high and indeed, 5 days later, another German army tried to take the wooden bridge. We were outnumbered 15/1 but my gladiators didn??™t show fear. They wanted that freedom real bad and they wouldn??™t let uncivilised Germans ruin their future. Like the last time, the Germans charged whitout order resulting in a pure massacre. For more than 6hours, they tried to storm the bridge but were repulsed by my courageous gladiators. At sunset, 8670 German corpses were lying on the ground drenched with blood. I had only lost 287 soldiers. Now that all the major armies were defeated, the road to the last cities was open. I took my gladiators with me on the route to Usipets. The city was in poor condition, the walls had many cracks in it, the gates were made out of roten wood and the soil wasn??™t rich at all. The city depended on trade but with my army creating a blockade, they had no option than to surrender. That night, I received news that the city of Treveri was poorly defended and that tere was no army near it. I sent a courrier to Labienus informing him of the situation and the attack. Labienus immidiately sent an army to take the city. A week passed with no answers from Labienus. I was geting nervous when suddendly, a messenger arrived telling news of the successful storming of Treveri. There was only 3 German cities left. In Usipetes, I braced myself for a counter attack and it came. A German army (10 000 strong) arrived and set up a blockade around the city. There German plan was to starve us out. But I had spies in the army. Theses spies had the mission to find the exact location of every tower and wall surroundig the city. As I examined the plans, I pin pointed a narrow breache were a small river was flowing. I waited for nightfall and then, with the help of boats, my men went outside the blockade. They took position on the wooden walls and at a signal, they attacked the sleeping Germans. At dawn, there was nothing left of the powerfull army. I decided to go to Traveri. After a short trip, I arrived at the city. The walls were rubble and the grounds surrounding the city was either red with blood or burned. I entered the city were thousands of people were cheering me. Labienus came riding to salute me. As we walked in the streets of Traveri, Labienus explained why the city and it??™s surroundings had a grim look: twice, the germans had tried to take the city but fortunatly, the defenders had manadger to hold the two impressive armies off. I was pleased with the results of my assaults and so did the senate. They were sending legions to meet me. They were already ???en route???. My next objective would be Aduatuci...

Part VIII
52BC ??“I immidiately sent peace offers to the Germans and Central gauls but they both refused any arrangements. That puts me in a dangerous position because the Centrals are strong and a long war could mean the end of my economical status in the senate. I could easely beat the Germans but I must put al my war efforts on the Centrals. I send an army to take Massilia. At first, they are unsuccessful trying to take the walls butafter quite a long time, they finally took the fortifications and stromed the city. The Centrals, furious with the loss of another city, sent 2 large armies to Branovices. It could have been a massacre but an army(roman) was patolling the mountains near the city when they saw those 2 armies. The general sent a messenger to warn the inhabitants of Branovices. The patrolling army ambushed the Centrals armies. They were waiting on top of the mountains and when the ennemies were in position, the romans came out of their hideouts and runned down the mountains shooting arrows and spears at the unsuspecting Centrals. The plan had worked perfectly. The first Central army was beaten off after a few hours of figthing(that army was mainly consisted of archers and javelinmen). But when the romans came to the second army, the surprise that had been a couple of hours ago, was gone and the Central were prepared to counter the surprise attack. After 18 hours, the surprise attack was finished. The Central had lost 13100 men and the romans, 3400. The Central had 5000 soldiers left but it was not enough to take a city defended by 8000 well prepared legionaries and numerous auxilliaries. Nevertheless, the Central general decided to attack the city. His 5000 soldiers stormed the walls of Branovices once before there was a disorganized retreat. Hundred of corpses were lying perforated by thousands of arrows. The next day, the Central general surrendered. The Centrals had lost pretty much all of their soldiers in the failed attempt on Branovices so I decided to terminate the German threat. I sent a large army(6000 legionaries+4000auxiliaries) to take Remi and another one(4500 legionaries+3500auxiliaries) to take Menappii. After 2 weeks of their departure, 2 messengers came riding back bearing news of great victories. My 2armies had not failed me. A week later, my 2 generals came back with thousands of prisonners and slaves. In all, I had 68000 POWs and 250 000slaves. I sent half the slaves to Rome and sold the other half to the Aremoricans, my only allies. The POWs were converted in a work force and were ordered to build forts and roads. A week after my glorious victories against the Germanic tribes, the Central Gauls asked for an audience with me. I accepted with exictement thinking that they wanted peace. I was not deceive hearing their king plead for forgiveness. I gladly accepted. I didn??™t anymore troubles with those Centrals for my eyes were directed to the Belgae. This small state had 4 cities. It wasn??™t a economically strong country nor had it many valuable goods but it did have something of value...an access to Britain. The senate whised to conquer Britain but needed a water connection with that island. The Belgae were the only one close enough to that continent. The senate sent me orders to attack and annex the Belgae??™s provinces but it would take a year of planning because eventhough the Central Gauls had made peace, they were still a threat and I could not remove troops from that border for fear of attacks. The rest of the year would mean little sleep and many hours of careful plannig for Roma??™s next victim would be the Belgae...

The End

51BC ??“For a full year, me and my generals were planing the attack of the Belgae. My spies reported sigthings of reinforcements and also the training of new soldiers. I wasn??™t afraid for my legionaries because for a barbarian army to defeat a legion, it needed to be twice has strong and it was I that outnumbered the Belgae. Suddendly, news from Central gaul were saying that a young man named Vercingetorix had taken the throne of the Central gauls and had attacked the border patrols and forts. This was outrageous and so, I decided to send all of my troops that were training for the invasion of the Belgae to attack Vercingetorix. That young man had made a wise move, he had ordered the burning of all the wheat fields and other sources of food and also, had ordered his population to retreat deep into their territory. My legionaries were not receiving any food because of the constant raids on my supply lines. I had to win a desicive victory quickly or I would lose all of my men. The city of Avaricum (the next cities, icluding this one are only there to tell the defeat of the Centrals. The text is in that way reduce for time reason) was renowned for it??™s large supplies of food and wine. Vercingetorix wanted the destruction of this strategic point but the governor of Avaricum was unwilling to destroy his fabulous city. He had a garrison of 3000 men, far inferior to my 20 000soldiers but was compensated by the thick walls of his city. After a short siege, during that time my engineers were building 2 siege towers, my men stormed the walls of this magnificent city. They encountered a small resistance but outnumbering the Centrals 6 to 1, the victory was quickly achieved. The city was full of food and wine, up to a two-year reserve. After that incredible victory, my next target was the city of Gergovia but there, my legionaries who were sure of a victory, charged the city without any suppor from the archers. It was pure massacre. I had lost half a legion. With that defeat, I tried to think of way to smashed the spirit of the central gauls. I needed to kill their leader to make the next one, agree to a peace agreement. Vercingetorix was relaxing in the stronghold of Alesia that year with an army of 50 000 strong. Eventhough our numbers were equal, he outnumbered me by the sheer defenses of Alesia. The city was built on a high hill ???plateau??? and had large walls that my catapults and ballistas could not hit. I faced a dilema : on one hand, intelligence said that a well led assault could secure a victory but that method would cost me thousands of men and on the other hand, local source told me that Alesia had little supplies to last a siege, eventhough I could suffer myself from famine. I decide to make a siege for the fear of losing to many men. Near the completion of the earthworks, I heard the rumors of a relief army that was recruiting thousands of volunters to help their loved leader. One of my mole told me that so far, the relief army was 120 000 strong and was geting bigger every day. At the sound of that sentence, I immidiately ordered the building of another earthwork facing our rear. Vercingetorix, forseeing my plan ordered a ???sortie???. 20 000 cavalrymen charged the formidable defenses in vain for they were pickoff by my archers. The next week, the relief army arrived and fear struck my men, 200 000 gallic warriors were behind us and 40 000 others were facing us. Eventhough I was extremely outnumbered, my earthworkshad been finished in time and had previously proven themselves. The next day, the relief army and the besieged one attack my defenses. It came close to defeat but my vaillant legionaries fought with desesperation. After 2 weeks of fighting, the ennemy was getting tired by large losses and decided to make one final attack. Vercingetorix also agreed because of the lack of food in Alesia, it could last only 2 more days. At dawn, more than 100 000 gallic soldiers stormed my 30 000 legionaries in a final do or die battle. The figthing went on until nightfall. To my amazement, we had hold off an impressive assault. That day, the Gauls had lost a little over 60 000men, I had lost 10 000. The next day, Vercingetorix came out of Alesia and surrendered at my feet. The central gauls had been vanquished and their country annexed to the roman empire. There was two countries left in Gaul, one that was an ally and the other who was an ennemy...the Belgae.

50BC ??“With fresh legions arriving from Italy, I had finally the wits and sthrengt to achieve Roma??™s power over Gaul. In the first week of the new year, I sent two legions, one to Nervii and the other to Morini. When they arrived, they found for the only defense of both cities a rag-tag militia of undertrained peasants. After a couple of hours of figthings, both cities were roman. I sent a legion to Atrebates to find the same defense as in Morini and Nervii. As both cities, Atrebates fell in a matter of hours. After interrogating locals, I understood the reason for those odd defenders : the Belgae king had ordered all of his soldier to the defense of the capital, Bellovaci. 70 000 soldiers were defending the capital, I had 40 000 soldiers with me. Like Alesia, I made a siege. After a month, the capital was begining to lack food so, they made an exit. Their charge was fearless and the first rows stormed the traps to make a bridge for the others. The others runned over their dead friends with ladders to take the wooden walls. Most of them were picked off by archers. When finally they reached to walls, those who were scaling the walls were killed by pillums or swords. The city had lost more than half of it??™s defenders in 3 hours. Later that day, they tried another attack but that one failed again. The Belgae king had no other choice but to surrender. When he finished is speach of reddition, I ordered his crucifixion and the same faith was for the defenders that were left and the inhabitants of Bellovaci. Finally, Gaul was a roman province. I had done what my ancestors had dreamed about for so long.

For the next years, I waged war to my rival, Pompey and finaly won a desicive victory at Pharsalus in 48BC but Pompey would still fight for 2 years until his death in Egypt. Now that these memoirs explain my conquest of Gaul and my brilliant victory over Pompey, I can finaly breath knowing that tomorow, I will be named Imperator of Roma by the senate. The senators have wished to see tomorow, March 15th (45BC) to crown me Imperator. Many important figures will be there including my adopted son Brutus. Now that my victory over Gaul is completed, I can finally say to all the Gallic soldiers that have waged war against me, VAE VICTIS
