Worth the Digital Download Price

Post by invaliduser83 »

Hello all!

I've been searching for something like Field of Glory for some time! Graphics certainly aren't a huge attraction for me. As long as a deep tactical ruleset exists and that believably is capable of depicting ancient/dark age/medieval field warfare then you'll have a very happy customer.

My brother and I were almost about to begin collecting Warmaster Ancients but after finding the games almost non existent support and the fact that the medieval army list was out of print we started to look at alternatives. I do enjoy the feel of a tabletop game but as much as I'd like to dedicate time to painting/collecting an army I just don't have the time I used to as I'm sure many of you understand. This digital version looks a little rough around the edges but does beneath it's retro shell lay a complex and enjoyable ruleset?

Anyway enough rambling... my questions:
As someone completely unfamiliar with the ruleset- is the digital version relatively easy to pick up/challenging to master?
Is it possible to learn the core rules without purchasing online manuals/printed copies of the rules?
If I purchase the existing version + army packs will I be required to repurchase once beta of this new version I'm seeing in development be required?
Is there an active community filled with a broad range of beginners to hardened veterans?
Is there an ipad/tablet version? (the slitherine website appears to confirm this but it doesn't exist in the app store)
Any australian players?
Would you recommend this game for someone obsessed with medieval warfare?

Look forward to hearing back!

Most definitely. You can get the following medieval expansion packs right now - "Storm of Arrows", "Swords and Scimitars" and "Eternal Empire". "Wolves From the Sea" and "Oath of Fealty" will hopefully be out this year. Then there is the scenario forum where you will find user-made scenarios including these . . .

I could nothing but agree with previous posters. I started playing in September last year and I've never regretted a second spent playing.

I think I'm suitably tempted now!

One last question. Is there a tutorial to help new players get started or is it straight into the deep end?

Well, I've invested 111,94 EUR into this game (the base game and 5 expansions), more money than in any other game I ever played. I had indeed fun with it in the beginning and high hopes for it's future development but was getting more and more frustrated with it as I was waiting in vain for any significant update on the AI, gameplay, terrain, better graphics etc. - for years. Sorry, as for now, I can only say that it was simply not worth all the money.

Maybe the finished new version will change my opinion one day. Hope so, but until then this game gets dusty on my hard drive.

Ok the advance of the new field og glory is a little slow. But maybe slitherine needs the programmers for other important projects.
But for me the game is ok like it is, i dont really need a new "Field of Glory" . If it comes ok, if not also ok.

In that case, stay well away.
While I was once an avid fan of the game, I got annoyed by the lack of sophistication and the overwhelming influence of the dice.

FoG is, first and foremost, a fast-playing tournament game. And to be fair, it has never claimed to be otherwise.
But it is certainly not a detailed simulation of anything.
IMO it is better compared to games such as e.g. Panzer Corps, and the Commander series.
Fast-playing, and fun in their own right, but don't think you'll be getting a grognard sim.

Cheers,
Lars

Whilst this may be true what are the alternatives? Are there any grognard computer sim medieval games out there?

For medieval, no.
For ancients, there's the HPS series.
Horrible interface, and questionable AI on that one, but it's not bad for MP.
And of course, if you don't mind the somewhat outdated GFX, there's the board-game conversion of the Great Battles series.

Besides, merely because there are no alternatives, it doesn't mean one should invest in what is left if it won't satisfy ones urges.
Even if there were no WWII alternatives, I still wouldn't play Panzer Corps. ;)

Cheers,
Lars

I still enjoy the odd game of Tin Soldiers
http://www.matrixgames.com/products/304 ... ius.Caesar
Which is often discounted as the product is a little old.

Having said that, I come back to FOG because of the multi-player function. So simple to get playing against real people. That is the strength of FOG.
