338 BC. Accompanied by his 18 years old son Alexander, Philip of Macedon marched south, intent on subdueing Athens which under Demosthenes had frustrated his claim to hegemony over Greece at every turn. Boeotia lay in his path and despite his best efforts to woo them, the Thebans elected to stand with the Athenians, their erstwhile enemies, for the sake of Greek liberty. Sometimes in late summer, on the field of Chaeronea, the two armies collided.

Designer's note:

Philip commanding the right wing lured the Athenians out of their strong defensive position with a feigned retreat. The scenario starts with the Macedonians about to turn the table on their pursuers.

There are many interpretations about Chaeronea as the primary sources are scanty. The most recent writing on the battle, and the only monographic treatment I'm aware of, is 'La bataille de Cheronee" by Jean Nicolas Corvisier (Economica, 2012).

Because the greek hoplites are better protected than the macedonian pikemen, a great deal rides on the impact and the subsequent morale test.
