Elephant Generals

Post by hoodlum »

A question was raised this evening.

If elephants can only be controlled by generals on elephants can other troops be controlled or influenced by generals on elephants?

Can a general on an elephant be used to add a 1 to the morale to a medium foot unit?

Thanks

Hi hoodlum

I think the only time you have to worry about elephant or noe-elephant generals is when you are deciding on whether they are able to join the battle group in close combat.

Aside from that I belive the generals are just the same in moving troops around, CMT's, CT's, etc.

The elephant general restriction is only on joining a battle group to fight in the front rank to affect the combat die re-rolls. For all other purposes, elephant and non-elephant generals are equivalent. Either may join any friendly BG in combat to assist in Cohesion Tests and CMTs.

Lastly Elephant generals may NOT join Cavalry for the combat re-roll. They may join any other BG however.

It is only re-rolls that are affected by whether the general is on an elephant or not. And generals only affect re-rolls when in close combat (page 24). So for everything else, including morale, it doesn't matter how the general is depicted.

Elephant generals can't affect the re-rolls of other mounted troops. So the elephant general could affect the morale of the MF and help their re-rolls oif he goes into close combat with them.

More than just cavalry; artillery (no general can) and any mounted troop type that is not elephants,.

I think technically, looking at the wording, the general could join the close combat, e.g an elephant general with cavalry, it's just that he doesn't affect the re-rolls so there's risk without benefit. I did have this is one game where an opponent sent an ally general in to fight with a unit of the main army. since he was a nice chap i let him take that back :)
