Hello World of Panzer Corps,
I was playing the Grand Campaign 43 and finished it yesterday, and decided to have a go at GC 44 Eastern Front. The first briefing mentioned that the weather would be snowing or something for the entire thing, so I didn't bring any airpower in, but the first 3 turns it was clear weather, and my Ju 52 Supply Plane got shot down first turn.
Is the weather going to be clear for the entire scenario, or was it just bad luck (90% snow etc.) that this happened.
Any strategy to getting at least an MV would be great.
Core Force at start of GC44:
6 x Grenadier 43
1 x Gebirgsjager 43
5 x Pioniere 43
2 x Panther A
1 x Tiger I
1 x 8.8cm PaK 43/41
1 x Stug 3 G
1 x Elefant
1 x 21cm Artillery
1 x 30cm Nebelwerfer '43
5 x Hummel
1 x 8.8 FlaK '36
+ around 60000 prestige (I crushed GC42 a while back and got nearly 100k prestige from it)

Go shopping for some armor and some aircraft (fighters and fighter-bombers). Your infantry won't survive for long in 1944 without more of both. In the game (as opposed to real life) it is possible to establish air superiority in most scenarios. If your aircraft are green, it may take a while to reach that point. In the meantime, those 88s will come in handy.
Specifically with regard to Korsun Pocket: (1) Don't move the "bridge engineers" from the airfields once they disembark. They are supposed to be supply depots. If you move them, they won't "count" towards a DV. (2) Think twice before trying to hold your initial positions in the south. Remember that your most important task is to establish a 360-degree cordon around those airfields, with some room for maneuver on all sides. The cordon need not be (and cannot be) equally strong all around its entire circumference, but it must be established fairly quickly.

Re: Korsun Pocket GC44 East
I just re-read the "Korsun Breakout" briefing and I could not even find the word "snow" in it. In fact it says explicitly to expect "NUMEROUS formations of enemy air units". So I think you misunderstood something.BiteNibbleChomp wrote:Hello World of Panzer Corps,

You have your infantry:armor ratio inverted. I would take about 12 tanks, 2 TDs, and 2 or 3 infantry unit. I looked at my last game and I also had 5 fighters, 1 fighter-bomber, and 4 Stukas. That got the job done in grand style. Going forward, there are few scenarios you that you need more than a handful of infantry.

I am talking about the Korsun Pocket - not Breakout - scenario (first one of GC44E) and it said something definitely about bad weather, because I tried it and didn't deploy an airforce, not realising that there would be instances of clear weather. About the Infantry:Armour - In the previous 3-4 scenarios (defense of the Panther Line) - Infantry have been helpful as there have been big cities to defend worth 3-4 or 5 objectives, and originally I thought this battle would be somewhat similar, so I have been building (or regenrating, It dies after a few scenarios, and I need a new one) the core on this assumption. - Tanks are hopeless at defending cities and cost ~700 points whereas Inf's cost ~200 (+100 for Truck) and last a bit longer.Kamerer wrote:I just re-read the "Korsun Breakout" briefing and I could not even find the word "snow" in it. Also, are any t34/85s or big formations of IS-1s and Yak-9s going to appear?

Air: There is good flying weather in just about every scenario. The only scenario I can recall in which I deployed no air units at all was Beaches of Normandy, and then only because the briefing explicitly instructed me to leave them at home.BiteNibbleChomp wrote:I am talking about the Korsun Pocket - not Breakout - scenario (first one of GC44E) and it said something definitely about bad weather, because I tried it and didn't deploy an airforce, not realising that there would be instances of clear weather. Armor: It is often possible to defend an objective without being in it. In this particular scenario, the first task is to establish a cordon around the supply airfields. There is a variety of terrain types to choose from, including clear terrain hexes suitable for armor.
Enemy: This is not one of the OMG-how-can-there-be-so-many-of-them scenarios, but there is some nasty heavy stuff headed your way from different directions. You will need armor and SP artillery for an effective mobile defense.
PS. Try swapping one or two of your Hummels for the sIG 38(t). It is a bit slower but has vastly better defense values. That may come in handy in a scenario like this, where your forces will be spread exceedingly thin.
Re: Korsun Pocket GC44 East
About the core: I'm a fan of having an even number of tanks, infantry and artillery (I aim for 8/8/8 in Wehrmacht, since I haven't played the GC yet). I wouldn't discard the Kradschutzen and Cavallerie. These are awesome units if used properly. The same is true for Panzer II Flamm (also being great for leveling up tanks fast).
EDIT: I disagree about not needing infantry. Watch Deducters's videos and see how he obliterates swarms of tanks with heavy infantry.
