recovered guns

Post by deadtorius »

Been a few months since our last game and we had a new situation I need to have clarified. When you recover guns it is the first opportunity where the enemy is more than 2 my etc. In our game I missed the whole first opportunity thing by a few turns, we read that in the rules later, but the first legal opportunity had a unit Austrian infantry standing on top of the abandoned gun markers. Would you still roll for the attempt then, and where would the guns be placed?
My best guess is touching the infantry close to where the markers were.

Hmmmm - Not something I've come across - although not THAT unlikely.
I would rules that they 'reappear' as close to their original position as possible.

Thing is:

Except for the Russians who have troops trained to use Artillery guns in every batallion, only the unit where the gunners ran way to to protect themself should be able to "raman" the guns.

i think that abandonned guns should be available to "reman" for any Russian infantry unit regardless if the gunners ran to there for cover.

The rules for recovering guns on pages 47-8 don't require the friendly unit within 6MU to be that same friendly unit that was close when the guns were abandoned.
The criteria for recovering guns is simply:

1. No enemy within 2MU;
2. A friendly infantry unit within 6MU, that is closer to the guns than unbroken enemy.

I don't think of abandoned artillery as gunners neccessarily running and hiding amongst any particular friendly infantry unit, and then moving with that unit where ever it goes. Rather it is simply that the gunners have abandoned their pieces. When the coast is clear and if friendly supports are in place, the gunners may drift back to re-occupy their pieces.

Cheers

I agree with Brett. And with placing them as close as possible to the original spot. It did mean that they actually ended up forming up behind the friendlies on the actual spot and facing back to their own LoC where some Frenchie hussards were trying to cause pain (but kept being knocked by the artillery!!! :evil: ).
