Swiss

Post by irondog068 »

I have pre ordered Storm of Arrows and Rise of Rome. I have a bunch of Swiss and French for the Great Italian Wars.
I plan to rebase for FOG and how are the Swiss mounted? I would think the pike are medium infantry. Crossbow and guns mounted as skirmishers and halbards as medium.

Am I right? I don't want to rebase a third time if I get it wrong.

I think the Pike and halbards are Heavy foot not Medium foot. This makes them 40x15 (60x20) 4 per base.
The Crossbows and Handgunners are Light Foot - 40x20 (60x30) 2 per base.

Pike as HI (4 to a base)
ditto halderdiers
Crossbowmen as light foot (2 to a base)
ditto handgunners
mounted crossbowmen as light horse (2 to a base)
artillery is light

if you pre-ordered your rules should be there soon :)

Crap! :(
I went with a hunch, (lack of armor and all) bought 40x20mm for Swiss and 40x30mm for the rest of the horde.

well the 40x20s ok for the lights and 40x30 for the mounted (or cut in two for 2xHF bases) and maybe buy some knights for the later option.

You could also use the 40 by 30 to make double depth bases for some of your pike. At the weekend I managed perfectly well with pike who were half on 40 by 15 and half on 40 by 30 bases.

The pike are already mounted on 40x30mm bases. Maybe if I leave them and use dead markers or make a 40x15mm base for each unit. My Swiss have

5x6 pike
4x4 Halbeders
1x4 handgunners
4x4 crossbow
1x4 LH with Gun (The army was for the Italian wars) but I coud make them crossbow
1x4 Gerdarmes (It is a later swiss army)
3x generals.
1x Artilery piece

I hope this is around 800. There is a tourney coming to Chicago in April

FWIW my 800 point Swiss army (well the one I used in Leeds a year ago) was:

6 BG of 8 bases of pike
3 BG of 4 bases of halberds
3 BG of 6 bases of light foot crossbow
1 BG of 6 bases of light foot handgun
1 BG of 4 bases of Light horse crossbow
1 inspired commander
2 troop commanders

How'd it do? (besides scaring the hell out of the troops in front of the pikemen) :D

The comp was an open one, not themed so it struggled against massed archery and horse archers.

There is I think a battle report from March 2007 in the Rules (was beta) forum.
