Hi All,
I'm looking through the Colonies and Conquest Japanese list again... am I missing something? Takeda can have up to 32 bases of mounted in the early period... but OTHER than that have no differences to ANY other Japanese list.
Why would anyone pick OTHER than Takeda, just so they have the options?
Alasdair,
Would 32 bases of Superior bow armed cavalry have much of a chance in an open comp? I mean there would be other stuff... but not much as the bases and commanders are quite a few of the points.

I think that if you're looking for a shooty cavalry army there are better options than the Japanese. Tatars, Early Ottoman (with Tatar allies) or Jurchen/Qing give you a better mix to support the cavalry.
For me (and most others that I've seen use it) the strength of the Japanese army lies in its infantry. My 800 point list is:
GC + 3 TC subs
2x4 Cavalry (light lance)
3x6 Heavily Armoured Samurai
1x6 Armoured Samurai
2x8 Armoured Ashigaru Spear
2x8 Armoured Ashigaru Bow
2x6 Unrmoured Ashigaru HW
1x4 Heavily Armoured Elite Hatamoto Guards
You normally want to get as much rough terrain down as possible as it doesn't slow the warriors and helps to clog up the flanks which is where you'll be weakest. The army is good against infantry opponents, can generally cope with armoured cavalry but Cuirassiers can be dangerous. The Samurai and Armoured Ashigaru will cover the central part of the table, I deploy the unarmoured Ashigaru behind (normally in one rank so they can contract towards where you most need them to provide rear support) and normally use the Hatamoto guards to protect the most open flank.

Yeah, but I WANT Japanese.kevinj wrote:I think that if you're looking for a shooty cavalry army there are better options than the Japanese. Tatars, Early Ottoman (with Tatar allies) or Jurchen/Qing give you a better mix to support the cavalry.
This is illegal - you can only have 2 sub-Generals.kevinj wrote:GC + 3 TC subs

3 x TC's Sub Generals is legal from 1561 and Kevin's list is legal between 1561 and 1575 when he would be required to have some Teppo (arquebus) armed Ashigaru! That's why his Mounted Samurai are Light Lance and not bow.
