Battle Report: Late Medieval Germans vs Romans

Post by seansmith »

Having no luck against the Ilkhanids my Later Medieval German (LMG) decided to have crack at some Romans. The result was cracking a good battle.

The LMGs won the initiative and choose agricultural. The terrain was open, apart from gentle hill on the LMG’s left flank and a field on their flank.

A battle group of crossbowmen and knights were deployed on left flank. A battle group of 12 Pikes, a battle group of 8 Halberdiers and a battle group of 4 Knights were deployed in the centre. The Light infantry and Light horse were deployed behind the field. A battle group of 6 Lighter men-at-arms (cavalry with armour and lancers) and a battle group of 6 Mounted crossbowmen were deployed on the Right flank.

On the Left flank the LMG marched a battle group of 4 Knights to face the Roman cavalry head on. The Crossbowmen were marched towards the hill, with aim of firing into the flank of the Roman cavalry.

In the centre the Pikes, Knights and Halberdiers held back, with intention of avoiding combat with the legionaries for maximum time, so the Roman flanks could be crushed.

On the Right flank the Light infantry advanced into the field, while the Light horse chased away the Roman light infantry armed with javelins. The Lighter men-at-arms and Mounted crossbowmen attempted get around the Right flank of the Roman army.

On the Left flank, seeing the legionaries being stripping of their flank protection, the LMG attempted to take advantage of this by advancing a second battle group of Knights to threaten Legionaries flank. While the Crossbowmen shoot at the cavalry to soft them up before for charge by the knights. The Romans counted by advancing a battle group of Legionaries to push the crossbowmen of the hill and Roamn Light foot advanced to shoot into the flanks of the Knights.

In the centre the Pikes and Halberdiers advance in an attempted to pin the Legionaries.

On the right flank the Roman medium infantry pushed back the LMG’s Light foot and the Light horse took over the role of delaying their advance. The Lighter men-at-arms charged into the Legionaries, disordering the Legionairies. The Mounted crossbowmen were forced to break off against another battle group of Legionaries.

On the Left flank the Knights charged, routing one battle group of Roman cavalry and fragmenting another after a couple of turns of combat. The crossbowmen rained down accurate fire on the Roman legionaries, disrupting them.

In the centre Knights failed to get on the flank of legionaries, because the Pike and Halberdiers had not succeeded in pinning them.

On the Right flank the Roman medium infantry continued their seeming unstoppable advance. The combat between the Legionaries and Lighter men-at-arms raged on. The Mounted crossbowmen charged again and for their efforts were again forced to break off and became fragmented.

On the Right flank more accurate shooting by the crossbowmen fragmented the Legionaries. The two battle groups of Roman cavalry where routed. In the centre the Legionaries facing the Knights were disordered. The Pikes had disordered the Legionaries they were facing. This was the high point for the LMG army.

Then it slowed started to swing back to the Roman army’s way. On the Right flank the general with battle group of Lighter men-at-arms was killed. The Light horse scrambled to avoid getting caught between the edge of battle field and the Roman medium infantry.

In the centre the battle group of 8 Halberdiers were disordered in the impact phase. The general with battle group of Knights facing the Legionaries was killed, disrupting the knights.

In the Left flank the Knights turned and routed the Legionaries facing the crossbows. In the centre a battle group of Legionaries broke the Knights and turned cover the rear of the other two battle groups of Legionaries from the remaining battle group of Knights. The Halberdiers broke and the legionaries then and charged into flank of the Pikes, routing the Pikes. The Medium infantry caught the Light horse and broke it. The Roman Light infantry armed with javelins caught the LMG light foot armed with crossbows in the flank and routed it off the battle field.

That was the end of the battle.

Lessons Learned.

1) During deployment I should have left a gap for the light horse to advance to attack the Roman light infantry and then retreat, without having to go back behind the field.

2) Once it was clear that Lighter men-at-arms and the Mounted crossbowmen were not getting able easily get around the Right flank of the Roman army, it would have better just to use the Mounted crossbow to delay and pin the two battle groups of Legionaries and for the Lighter men-at-arms to withdraw and deal with the medium infantry.

3) I should not have allowed my light horse and light foot to be broken.

4) The two generals being killed was bad luck. However, I had no reserve to counter the unexpected. The Lighter men-at-arms could have acted as a reserve.

5) The Knights on the Left Flank should have turned to face the Legionaries in the centre, not the Left flank. The fragmented Legionaries on the Left flank would have been forced make a cohesion test if my Crossbowmen had charged them.
