i think they can also be in BG of just 4 bases if you are feeling suicidal

P 16 says: "English allied commanders' contingents must conform to the Wars of the Roses English allies list below, but the troops in teh contingent are deducted from the minima and maxima in the main list.
Considering the above, if you take an ally, and all troops in the allied contingent have longbow with stakes, it stands to reason that the main army does not need to. Naturally if the main army did, then all would have to. Similarly, if the main army all had stakes then the allied contingent need not.
Thoughts?

This isn't something that I'd considered, but given that the line 'Stakes to cover...etc" appears in both the main list and the allied list suggests that your interpretation could be valid - but I think it will down to the judgement of the list checker on the day.
