Holding the heights (8)

Post by enric »

Also called: The Bloody Hill. (why a dual name for many scenarios?)

Objectives
  • Capture and hold
In fact you begin with all flags already captured, maybe just hold 3 of 5 will be more clear.

Overall and others
A lot of units (above all, tanks).
This can be a interesting scenario,
I use to evaluate a scenario, playing it as well as possible but just once, because after the first time you know many positions where the enemies are, and which are the AI obsessions. BA'AI never change its mind, as a human will do when things are going different as expected.

As usual there are an excess of tanks related to the infantry so, I concentrated my indirect fire on infantry, killing or disrupting all time.
H35 is a too much killer, it kills a 100% infantry in indirect fire very often. (maybe too much).
So, the AI feels lost because its infantry never reaches its targets and the tanks are blind and can't take a building.
With the three 15CM I crushed one after other every infantry, and later disrupted and killed many tanks, priest, etc.
I lost all tanks, but don't lose a flag.
At the end, my infantry (gold level two) had no work because no infantry enemy left and no resupply bonus, so no way to deal with the tanks left.

Maybe a bonus resupply is needed.

I was amusing using the H35 to persecute some disrupted tanks.

hi Enric - do you think that its the strength of the h35 needs adjusting or the accuracy of its bombardment (or both)?

Indirect fire can have more o less suppression, but killing a whole unit should happen only occasionally, I did not look at the H35 values in the squads.csv I just observed that it killed frequently all squad. Maybe both values should be reduced, all indirect fire is too accurate and powerful (in my opinion) in BA.

I didn't lose a flag but didn't get the "Hold all VPs" star. Also, the H35 issue didn't really come into play because I didn't realize it was in the LOS of a Sherman and lost it. However, if I recall correctly, it didn't wipe out every member of its infantry targets. The priests are pretty effective for the other side, so it doesn't seem like that much of an unfair advantage.

The AI didn't seem to push hard enough with its Churchills when it ran into my tanks and guns. I couldn't have penetrated their armo(u)r and yet they just sat there and didn't advance. Eventually, I was able to flank them and pick them off (while still losing a bunch of armor in the process).

Also, as I have noticed in other scenarios in Rommel, the alerts feature Allied commanders (as seen above) and not German commanders in the dialogue boxes (indicating the arrival of reinforcements, e.g.).

Hi Mattymo, thanks for the feedback. Did the Churchills stop after capturing a VP or was it that they halted once they faced opposition?

It seemed they halted when they faced opposition. Opposition that was taking out neighboring (less well-armoured) vehicles, but opposition that was probably worth taking on given their numbers. And, as you point out, their mission. Yeah, eventually some of them turned around as if to attack the other side of the line. (Exposing their only slighly-less thick rear armor, but curious nontheless.)

ß2.2.2

-Reinforcements dialogue box depicts GI (i.e., US soldier).

-With 3 turns remaining, the game declared victory, preventing me from obtaining 3 of 4 stars that I would likely obtain (holding all VPs, which I was doing, and destroy all Churchill crocodiles and promote the Panzerschreck to elite, both of which I was about to do). Frustration! :P

I like this level but I agree the AI tends to start well and then falters a bit. I too got the US officer for the reinforcements. Also 28,34 is designated forest but has no trees and 43,32 has trees but is designated open ground.
I haven't used the H35 to be honest - I just love Schleppers so I use them instead.

Where do I find the .csv file for the unit values that Enric mentioned? I can find them for the downloaded games generated by other users but not for the main game.
