Gallic army Cav vs Ancient British Cav ?

Hi all


I'm working out how to use my 15mm DBM Ancient Britons as Gauls for now , but all my Cav is based in 2's as light Cav
No option for light Cav in the Gallic list as far as I can see ?
At least I can use a few chariots .

Are big Battle groups the way to go for my Warriors ?


Anyone in Sydney playing FOG ?

Caeser reported that the Gallic cavalry fought in very open formations which he felt rendered it less effective.I'm not a scholar -I got this from the Osprey Celtic Warrior. Ive based mine with the same number per base as my British Cav but don't class them as skirmishers. Also My British cav is early Foundry and the Gallic ones are those chunky later mothers so it gives them a bit of room.

You will find that FoG can emulate this in a couple of ways.

LH (2 per) not capable of standing up to enemy head on.
CV (3 per) two ranks deep. This is the role that optimizes density for combat power. Not CV with Light spear and sword without serious armor will get roughed up by legionaires so this will work well.
CV (3 per) deployed one rank deep. This can skirmish and while they cover more forntage are even weaker in close combat versus their traditional foes.

So I would look for the gallic cavalry to be taking on too many foes head on. They are better versus medium foot, so would be a notch better versus more open order infantry.

I think probably most of your warriors in large BGs (10 or 12 bases if possible) to fight with and some in small BGs (6 bases if possible) as rear support.

Be very careful where you put the rear supports so the front line BGs can contract to go past them when they rout.

For what its worth

Worth going for 10s or 12s for the main battle line to get maximum upgrade from the generals.

I use 1 8 as rear support for them.

Ancient British and Gauls are totally different in use.

GUALS

Relies on HF charge timed correctly with Gaesati in the lead. Need to get the timing right and use the generals well

BRITONS

Relies on very good use of skirmishers to frustrate the opposition and then dominance of any terrain

My lists haven't arrived yet; how many elements of Gaesati might there be in a Gallic army, and are they 4 to a base, please?

0-24 bases, in BGs of 8-12.
