Unit Availability

Post by Paperpanzer »

I’ve just started DLC 39 again! But this time going through on General.

I really do miss having the odd Pzkpfw III or IV. As these tanks were available but in very limited numbers, could there not be a limited availability rule as there was in PG3? Where you could have one unit of either III or IV and that limit could be extended through the game. This could then be extended in DLC 40 onwards as I’m sure like everyone else I’ve dropped the Pzkpfw 1’s faster than third period French. Even though these tanks were still being used up-to 1943 in some capacity or other. This would give a greater historical accuracy as you would be forced to use 38t’s in France and even in Russia.

New unit type suggestion.

How about a supply unit? Which could give a limited resupply to one unit at a time... for when you have to go that extra mile. Could be just a truck or a SDKFZ 252 or a Munition panzer – it could give a new lease of life for all those abandoned Pzkpfw 1’s

intersting suggestions, however here's my opinions about them:

The extremely limited availability of Pz III/IV during 39 makes their use in PzC a bit unrealistic and unhistoric. These tanks played virtually no role whatsoever in Poland and even limited in France. The czeck tanks were actually the heaviest and best tanks largely available and the Pz II remained the workhorse until Russia. That might not be nice, but that was the situation for a lot of the commanders. Completely inadequate of course, but there you go.

As for the supply tanks... I don't know. Supply has always been abstratced in this type of games, starting with PG and I feel that the addition of such a unit would feel out of place, especially considering that resupply of units rarely ever happened during a battle but between battles and supply wasn't any separate unit but a very central part of each unit, which is exactly what made the german panzer divisions so special, they had everything they needed integrated and were completely self-sustaining. They had supply and maintenance units integrated which moved with them and they maintained and repaired vehicles between engagements. However complete replacement of total vehicle losses and soldier casualties, that never happened while a battle was going on unless that battle lasted very long. That only happened when units were engaged very very long and could not be removed from the front lines. But usually a battle began and ended, panzer units were pulled back, infantry units held the line while the panzer division were refreshed and refitted for the next large engagement. So in my opinion such a mechanic just does not fit into the scope of the game. But that's just my 2 cents.
