How to create different colours of water tile - for depth?

Post by GottaLove88s »

Is it possible to use different colours for water tiles?

I need a dark blue for deep ocean, a mid-blue for medium-depth, and a light blue for shallow water for a WW2 Pacific Guadalcanal scenario -> viewtopic.php?f=87&t=41434&p=389555#p389555

Only transports (LCIs and LCTs) will be allowed to enter shallows, and shallow-draught warships (ie. destroyers) into medium-depth. Cruisers, Battleships and Carriers will be restricted to deep ocean.

I thought I'd seen both light and dark blue water before, but I can't find 'em this morning?

Hmmmm. The PC version uses "shiny" water which over-rides the tile settings for the visuals. So it might be tricky. On Mac and iOS I think it uses an over-ride texture too.

So the short answer is 'no'. You could of course have entirely new tiles that work in that way, but you would then (a) not get water effects (e.g. it wouldn't splash, it would throw dirt) and (b) need edging etc.

It's not something we had considered when we built the gfx pipeline. I will add a task to my list to take a look and see if we can add something in for the next update (although that won't be for a while! It's too late to add anything to Husky)

Cheers

Sorry for reviving this dead thread but any water infantry can "swim" in?

Hmmmm. I don't think so. You could try creating a second terrain type which is flagged as water, but which has passable AP values. I'm not sure whether that would work correctly though, as water has some special case code scattered through the game.

Thanks Pip, no worries. Is it possible to have some new genuinely water tiles in the next, next update? Or BA2 even?

Giving the BA engine real naval options feels like something worth exploring, no? :?

Please, please...

Sorry to be such a pest...

We will definitely look at removing any limitations re: water in BA2. We're not going to start digging down to that level in BA at this point in its codebase's lifecycle. The poor old girl needs TLC, not more invasive surgery :)
