UK Interest - FoGR National Rankings March 2013

Post by timmy1 »

In the files area of the Yahoo group (and soon hopefully on the BHGS and Slitherine sites) you will find the FoGR National rankings to March 2013. Competition added this time is the Southern League Clevendon round. Please note that the 2012 BHGS Challenge results have dropped as that was held in March 2012.

The results are very interesting as we have a new name at the top of the Rankings, replacing Ben Jones. Doubly interesting as it is the first time the Rankings have been headed by someone who is not a member of the Oxford club...

As usual, any corrections, please let me know.

What were the new competitions and drop outs for March. I thought the only comp in March this year was the Clevedon round of the Southern League and Alasdair won that!

If the drop out comp was The Challenge as it was in March last year, shouldn't it. Wait till April to drop out so the Challenge is in the Rankings?

Yes the BHGSC did drop out and Clevedon was added. You might think that the BHGSC should remain in. However the rankings are rolling 12 months window (with the most recent taken if a comp occurs twice in one 12 month period - occurred when Roll Call switched from October to May a few years back).

If I have misunderstood (and not saying I have not), I am quite happy to change to include the BHGSC in the March results, subject to approval from the BHGS Politburo.

But if Alasdair won both (which he did) why does his score drop so much?

I think you can only go on the rolling 12 months. Whilst some competitions are very fixed, others can float around and it wouldn't be sensible to add calculations based on when a certain competition usually occurs. Challenge will always be mobile as it tends to be linked to the first full moon following the Vernal Equinox. On the other hand, if the same tournament does occur twice within a particular 12 month period I see no reason why both should not be included.

BHGSC and Britcon count as protected majors and are worth 120% of their natural score. Also your position always counts (morale of the story take tourney tiger armies to the worlds...). Alisdair came 7th at Britcon and no BHGSC result is currently counting. RBS came 2nd at Britcon so sneaks ahead of Alasdair. I am almost certain that normal service will be resumed in April.

Kevin

You might be right. To avoid 2014 problems based upon when the moon is spotted at Jer's house (so to speak), I will ask the BHGS for a ruling on the issue of a comp recurring within a 12 month cycle.

Evening,

As there was an odd number at Clevedon and I could not play, should I be credited for umpiring?

I know it use to happen in the ancients.

However the Rankings are calculated (and I'm happy with the methodology) the key fact remains:-

Congratulations to Richard B-S on grabbing the TOP slot in what is a very competitive set of (well written - lol) rules - very well done!! :D

Certainly, if you were a non-playing umpire you get an umpire credit. If you can get the official results updated to record same and let me know when done I will update it in the rankings. (April's I hope will be out in a week or two.)

Don

Absolutely agree, RBS has done well both on grabbing the No.1 slot and in having written the rules so that even he can play them well...

If you speak to him and get that post updated to reflect a non-playing umpire (and PM me when done) I will get the results updated...
