1) What is the minimum size to get started?
2) Will the Wargames Factory boxes be enough to play a game with on their own, or will multiple boxes be required to play with a minimum number of models on the table?
I'm new to historical games and don't have my own armies yet. I restrict my miniature spending so can't go out and buy a tournament ready army in one go so being able to play whilst building my army over time is going to be an important consideration before dropping cash on rules and minis.

It is looking like the standard size for a tournament army will be 800 points of 15mm or 650 points of 25mm (although if played on bigger tables with longer moves 25mm will also go to 800 points).
The cheap way to get things moving would be to play with blank bases, that way you will be able to get an idea of how the game goes befoe you comit to buying miniatures and painting.
I don't know how the Wargames Factory figures will be packaged but I suspect that they may produce boxed armies that match the starter armies in the army lists (600 points). The starter armies are perfectly viable for a game but I think that most tournaments will be at higher point values.

Re: A Couple Questions
1) if by size, you mean how bases, it depends on which scale (15mm or 25/28mm. I am guessing by question 2 you are looking at 25/28mm. The standard points for this seems to be 650pts. So you are looking at about 130 to 150 infantry Figs of various types and 20 to 30 Cavalry.Sergeant_Crunch wrote:1) What is the minimum size to get started?

2) WF are saying that their boxes are 48 infantry, but you will need Legionaries (which they have started to sculpt), Auxillia Foot, Auxillary Cavalry and Light Foot. Theres no numbers on quantities for the other figs (but 48 for the foot seems likely, with maybe 24 Cav) yet, so difficult to quantify how much its going to cost.
I've just had a Classical Greek army painted in 15mm (Xyston Figs and painted for me by someone with some talent

And indeed in any scale, though 15mm and 25/28mm are the commonest scales used.davidandlynda wrote:Just to clarify for a newcomer.Wargames factory are not compulsary, albeit very nice, these rules can be played with any manufacturers figures
Unless you have a ready made opponent, or plan to solo, you might be well advised to contact any local wargames groups before you invest in a lot of figures. If they play only 15mm you may choose to go for that scale instead of 28mm. Though I must admit that the Wargames Factory figures look very tempting.

I realize any manufacturer can be used, but the Wargames Factory figures seem to provide an excellent price per figure efficiency while maintaining what appears to be good quality. I'm waiting for the reviews before I bite on the figures. I do have a local opponent so it's not imperative, but I don't want to be constantly borrowing his armies. 15mm is tempting as well, but I have concerns regarding finding opponents as I move a lot with my job.
I play sci-fi wargames primarily in 10mm, but also have and occassionally play in 6mm and 28mm, with some minor dabbling in starship games. I do all my own painting, albeit somewhat slowly being a father. Looks like regardless of scale it will be a project I build up over time till I get a ready force. I'm not really much of a tournament player, but don't want to have an anemic army either. I'll have to try the blank base idea. At least I'll already have the bases when the figures arrive. Maybe I'll tape some cardstock cut outs to them in the mean time.
Thanks for the quick responses with the information I needed.
