Battle of Fornovo 1495 . . .

Here is the first version of this slightly different type of scenario . . .

Turk1964 and myself will be continuing the play tests but there is no reason why others cannot join in if they want to. There are a number of "house rules" associated with this scenario and they are highly recommended. In fact, without them the scenario will not really work properly.

They are as follows . . .
I) On the first Italian move only mounted units may be moved. The infantry may be moved on turn 2. There are just 12 turns in the scenario.
ii) for the French to win they must either get a leader unit to the eastern map edge and inflict more losses on the Italians than they have received or they must inflict 50 break points or more on the Italian army so that they are forced to call off the attack.
iii) for the Italians to win they must kill or capture Charles VIII; or they must destroy 2 out of the 4 baggage carts (to represent successful looting); or they must completely rout the French army.

Note - killing or capturing Charles VII is achievable in 3 ways. Firstly, getting the "aaargh!" sound in combat; secondly, completely destroying the Charles VIII unit; thirdly, "routing" the Charles VIII unit.

NB: I have taken some of the information from this eyewitness account which is really worth reading . . .

Right, me and Mark are about half-way through the first two play-tests of this one and it is looking good. We have got "double moves" off at the moment - we will try another two games with "double moves" on afterwards. We have been talking about "pushing the envelope" a bit lately and the idea of this scenario is to do that in terms of the games' objectives. This is not a straightforward battle - it is a "pursuit" of a smaller army (the French) by a much larger but inferior one ( the League of Venice). The Italian army totals around 1400pts while the French is 650pts. The French have to get their army across the map in 12 turns without losing their king (Charles VIII) or their baggage train (it was looted in real life) and they must inflict more casualties on the Italians than they sustain. The Italians must either kill the king or loot the baggage train or they must stop the French reaching the map edge. Any other result is a draw . . .
