Operation Jubilee - Dieppe - Pls upgrade to 1.1

Post by GottaLove88s »

Small detachment of Royal Marine commandos, supported by a Croc, perform a textbook night assault on an MG42 position believed to guard a 152mm Coastal Gun... Nice!

With huge thanks to fellow collaborators LandMarine47, Amaris, Ranger, Morge4 & iProp...

Operation Jubilee: Dieppe Raid v1.1 is available for download

Health warnings for Dieppe newbies:

* To keep it simple for me, I've built Dieppe on the GJS'44 mod... Sorry for the few who can't tolerate that... Everyone else, please enjoy!
* If you're willing to experiment, this means that your infantry will have a much more interesting war. They're tougher to kill/suppress than they are in plain vanilla BA (there are more men per squad and they start with a bit more morale). HMGs, MMGs and mortars can move short distances
* Amaris' fabulous 'real engineers' are active (can place/remove tank traps, demolish walls, cut trees, clear marsh... Each action consumes 1 charge) :D

* Allies start in Sussex, England... First turn, load up your infantrymen into your ships (up to 1 unit into each LCA or destroyer, up to 3 units into each LCT). Some LCAs and LCTs already hold a unit of armour. DO NOT UNLOAD THESE!! You won't be able to put them back.
* Germans start with some units at the seafront but with HQ 302nd Infanterie, 10th Panzer reserves and a group of radar engineers further back
* Germans can deploy but only within the areas further back... Think of it like reinforcement, but you know exactly what you're getting... you can figure out approximately how long it's going to take you to get to the action... and you can choose your own route to get there, in case there may be a possibility of you urgently needing to change the destination of your 'reinforcements'.

* Dieppe was one of the biggest combined ops of the war (the biggest at that time) so both sides have access to serious airpower
* Destroyers are much tougher than German Vorpostenboot. Vorpostenboot are slightly tougher than German Ubootjager (sub hunters)
* Destroyers, Vorpostenboote and Coastal Guns can bombard or fire smoke... You're going to need all the smoke that you can make!!

* Royal Marine Commandos, Wehrmacht & RM Snipers, and 10th Pz armour ('fresh' from Russia) all start as three stripers

* First 5 TURNS HAPPEN AT NIGHT with line-of-sight (LOS) halved for all units from both sides (a good time for a landing, Captain Hughes-Hallett? ;-))

* 8 VP flags... Winner holds best of 8 VP flags at the end. Automatic win by taking all 8 at any time... 35 turn limit (for now; pls let us know if that's too long/short)
* Good luck gentlemen (and ladies)... Happy hunting!

Illustrated reminders (for those, like me, too lazy to read warnings  ):

Dieppe is a major, fortified harbour town
Image

There are cliffs both sides of the port and promenade... They're well defended
Image
Image

The Allies have brought a substantial convoy (their biggest since Dunkirk)... carrying 6,000 troops... Canadian, Brit Royal Marines, US Rangers and Free French Commandos...
Image
Image

But the assault craft are pretty puny
Image

Heck, some of your LCAs already have holes in 'em, lol
Image

So, remember to use your EIGHT Hunt class destroyers to lay a lot of smoke to hide what you're doing
Image

And don't be shy about using your 4-inch guns to bombard the living daylights out of your enemy on those clifftops
Image
Image

Don't forget the RAF (and the Luftwaffe)... Dieppe was the biggest combined op of the war at that time... Allies enjoy airstrikes from B17s, Blenheims, Typhoons (the flaky, pre-Merlin engined version, so don't expect their usual kick ass power & accuracy) & Hurricanes... Likewise, the Germans can call upon He111s, Stukas & Fw190s, flying from nearby aerodromes at the Pas de Calais... Yup, that is Dieppe harbour to the top left of the RAF Boston below...
Image
Image

Allies enjoy a critical potential advantage of concentrated strength, if they can land enough of their assault craft... Germans start scattered around the map but can bring up strong reserves
Image

The Germans usually win...
Image
Image

And the Allies should expect to suffer severe losses on the beaches
Image
Image
Image

Taster Screenshots

Dieppe is a 64x64 map concentrating on the battle area between the Eastern and Western Headlands, including Blue, Red & White beaches
Image

First turn, Allies must load up their LCTs (up to 3 units into each LCT). Do NOT unload the vehicles already loaded because you can't put them back.
Image

As Allies, remember that you can also load infantrymen into destroyers (up to 1 unit into each destroyer)
Image

Once your fleet is loaded, deploy it for your assault... Let HMS Calpe lead the way... Check out the serious airpower available!
Image

First 5 turns take place at night, with halved line of sight for all units (Allies must use this wisely... and quickly)
Image

The Germans control the seafront, but also have a (weak) naval presence of 3 Vorpostenboote and a freighter convoy sailing to Dieppe from Boulogne (you may or may not wish to redeploy this inside your Outer Harbour... they won't stand a chance if the Royal Navy destroyers find them)... Expect the Luftwaffe to be highly active, flying from nearby bases
Image

The Germans can also summon reserves from 302nd Infanterie Division HQ...
Image

...and from 10th Panzer Division...
Image

...plus a small contingent of engineers working at the radar station
Image

With luck, that should leave plenty of scope for every battle to turn out differently...

But can the Allies actually win??!!

Ranger successfully lands a major force of 5 Churchills and 6 infantry (a Royal Marine squad has already made it inside the bunker) on Red Beach... while his destroyers AA easily knock my vengeful Fw190 out of the sky...
Image

Known Bugs (please post any more you find on this thread... All feedback welcome!)

* FIXED in v1.01 - Germans freighters sail backwards (Thanks for explaining the problem Richcat, and huge thanks TwoEyes for kindly sharing Slith's 180o rotated 3d model :D)
* FIXED in v1.01 - Can't seem to load more than 1 unit per LCT (Amaris has written an excellent mod to load 3, but I need to do more work on this)
* IMPLEMENTED in v1.02 - Plan to include dynamic lighting, so the first 5 turns take place at night (making Allied landings possible, or perhaps not entirely impossible lol)
* FIXED in v1.02 - Unit info icons needed for Freighters and LCTs (Thank you for your usual excellent work, Amaris!)
* FIXED in v1.02 - KIA 'score' screen doesn't list lost/killed warships
* FIXED in v1.03 - Three PC users reported 'blank blue screen' during the night phases (night colours are now brighter generally; appears to fix the problem for PC users affected)
* ADDED in v1.03 - LCTs and freighters modded to permit them to load tanks/vehicles
* ADDED in v1.03 - Permit infantry squads to 'ride' on tanks... Permit tanks to 'tow' artillery (Coastal guns remain fixed in place)
* ADDED in v1.03 - Limit the movement/firing arc of coastal guns (Excellent code tips Amaris, Merci!)
* ADDED in v1.03 - Warships & Coastal Guns lose their remaining shots when they bombard
* ADDED in v1.03 - Warships (RN/Polish destroyers & German Vorpostenboot) can move after firing smoke screens
* FIXED in v1.04 - LCT's cannot load 3 units if they unload before loading (thanks for the fix Amaris)
* FIXED in v1.04 - Prevent Coastal Guns from firing behind in suppression
* FIXED in v1.04 - Correct the weapon/armour stats of the Churchills (from 1944 -> 1942)
* FIXED in v1.04 - Slightly enhance the weapon/armour stats of the Panzer IVs (from PzIVA -> PzIVD)
* ADDED in v1.04 - Warships (RN/Polish destroyers & German Vorpostenboot) can move after bombarding
* ADDED in v1.04 - Night-to-day switch is now slightly less jarring, with a two turn 'dawn' between them
* ADDED in v1.04 - Yes LandMarine, there's now a summer rain flurry during night and dawn that ends as the sun comes up fully
* ADDED in v1.1 - More charges for assault units
* FIXED in v1.1 - Enforce delays to prevent fighter-bombers or off board arty until dawn (at the earliest)
* FIXED in v1.1 - Prevent 'dead unit LOS' (where BA permits units that have been killed to enjoy LOS for one more turn)
* FIXED in v1.1 - Remove 'must hold 1 flag' defeat condition
* FIXED IN v1.1 - Remove the rain effect
* ADDED in v1.1 - Add UI flash ups to explain deployment, night and dawn
* FIXED in v1.1 - Dawn LOS to 80% (from 66%)
* 35 turn limit (plan to observe how this goes before finally deciding on the right number of turns)
* Info text is missing for several 'new' units
* Would be great if LCAs said something like 'the current is too strong' rather than 'we're bogged' (thanks Ranger)
* There seems to be an occasional iPad crash problem, which occurs when loading?

Change Log (what's coming in v1.11)

* Waiting for feedback on v1.1
* Reduce accuracy and increase ambush skill at night
* Ships should have to move to turn, ie. no moving on the spot (and no moving to response fire)
* Enable move and bombard/fire smoke for warships

Well I can tell that under our combined control we can make this work! Since you have a lot more experience at Modderating ill leave the initial modding to you and ill be in charge of making this mod look as realistic as I can be! Before I go and study everything I can is this going to be SP MP or both? And will we have to play as the Axis or the Allies?

After a brief Study of the order of battle here is what I've come up with to help you when placing units
Allied*
Canadians had a major amount of infantry so here what I've come up with. They should have the following.
Lots if infantry
Mortars
Heavy and Light LMGs
Tanks (Mostly Stuarts)
Some engineers
Some Scouts
British/American
The Brits had a mostly Spec ops load out and even the US 1st Rangers were present during the raid
Brits should have Commandos and Some Rangers must be present
Naval*
Some 8 Destroyers were present during the raid and 9 landing craft were also around for it.
British and American Air forces played a major part during the raid but most were shot down
Hurricanes and Belhiems for air support and Naval Artillery should be everything and maybe medic(it's up to you GL88,'s)
Germans*
At Dieppe the Germans had a strong Garrison of the following
Lots of troops (slightly less then the Canadians)
A strong Heavy Flak(AA)
2 Coastal Batteries
Some engineers
A fair amount of scouts
And even some AT we're present
Outside Dieppe acting as reinforcement were
A fair amount of Panzers
Waffen SS
And more infantry
The Lutwaffe played a good part during the raid
So Stukas and FWS as well as 150MM artillery and Medics were available to the Axis.
Now I can't justify the exact amount of units on the Map itself but hope you find this useful!
Haven't seen any German Naval units but lets just put some in to piss of the Allies when a German PT comes and sinks their landing craft!

I think we should work off this map for your map Jon...

I would like to work on the Axis forces, just need to know how many Axis units you are thinking of, 30ish?

Hey Al... WOW!! Excellent find! Exactly what we need.

Have begun experimenting with what scale works, to approximately copy this map, sprinkling on plenty of GL88 imagination to create something fun to play... Please forgive me if I sprinkle on too much 'pixie dust' tho, lol...

Yes, please totally experiment with German unit classes. Have found a reliable looking description of the German order of battle and their dispositions here -> http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/UN/Cana ... rs-11.html

If we give the Allies maybe 8 destroyers, plus Naval Arty, plus B17 (two drops per game), plus Hurricane (more frequently), but keep the assault deployment entirely at sea (so that every game is different), how many units do you reckon the Germans will need? To do justice to your tactical map above, I'll need to go 64x64 for sure. Description of Allied fleet here -> http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/UN/UK/U ... II-10.html

I was thinking a mix of VGs and regular infantry on the sea front and in the town... plus nested 42s, 34s, a couple of 152mm coastal guns, 75s, 57s, 37s (apparently no 88s in Dieppe ;-))... with reinforcement Waffen SS, regs and some tanks further back on the map... No German deployment allowed. Reinforcements have to drive where they're going, which will take some time... Allied recon knew (sadly, far too approximately) where the German defences and garrisons were, so let's replicate that...

Any idea which tanks were present in Dieppe in '42? I'm sure that the Tiger and Panther weren't available. Would the PzIV or StuG have been there? Which version of the StuG? The A? Or are the Germans playing with IIs and IIIs...???

Guys, Thanks to Al's helpful background map :D :D :D , I'm creating something that stretches from Blue beach (Royal Regt Canada landings) through Red & White beaches (Royal Hamilton Light Inf, Essex Scottish, Fusiliers Mont Royal, RM 'A' Commando, 14th Canadian Calgary Tank Regt), to the West Headland and the Castle (doesn't quite make it as far west as Green beach for the South Saskatchewan and Cameron Highlanders). I'll include all of the port, harbour and canal locks, the Promenade, the Casino, much of the railway lines and the station, the Chapel on the East Headland, and something of the cliffs, leaving some (probably not genuine) gaps for attackers to utilise... Forgive a little poetic licence, but to provide some desperately needed cover for the suffering grunts, I've pulled the Forêt d'Arques up towards the NW, so that its fringes will begin at the eastern edges of Dieppe town... We still need lots of 1940's era photos to help get the right mix of buildings (see request above) if anyone has a few moments spare to kindly plunder Google for us... 8)

Quick screenshot of where we're up to so far... As promised, the Blue (eastern), Red & White (central) beaches are in... Dieppe's port, harbour and promenade are all there, plus the canals and locks system... The park is in, with the railway lines running up to the harbour... I plan to put the Castle on the Western Headland and the chapel on the Eastern Headland... And, with your forbearance, I confess that I brought the Forêt D'Arques (and therefore the Wehrmacht 2nd Bn 570th infantry regt HQ) much closer in towards the eastern fringes of town... Also, you'll realise I had to twist things 20 degrees clockwise, to work better with BA's editor...

Sadly, sorry guys, I've got to pause it there for now (am on shift tonight/tomorrow) but would really appreciate any 1940's era pictures of Dieppe, if anybody has free time to hunt around. In particular, am looking for...

- Dieppe Castle
- Dieppe Casino
- Shops & street images
- Churches
- Railway station
- The Mairie
- Other major buildings

Thanks everyone!

I have found some information (still looking)...

http://fw190.hobbyvista.com/dieppegroundunits.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieppe_Raid#German_forces

It looks like regular infantry, engineers, 50mm and 75mm AT guns, some 105 howitzers and approx 10 150mm, 3 170mm and 4 105mm coastal guns. I keep seeing mixed results about 88's, some state Heavy Flak others just mention light Flak (mobile and fixed). It also appears they had a few boats (three) and FW190's.

Still looking but, I estimating around 30-40 German units. Some sources say that the Germans were on alert in the area and expecting something.

Thanks Al. Nice work. Great to have you on our little 'Dev Team'! :-)

So looks like we're going with...
- a mix of VGs, regular infantry, engineers, scouts (any Waffen SS?)
- MG42 and MG34 teams
- a mix of ATGs including 75mm, 57mm, 37mm
- let's go with Wirbelwind for AA but reduce their movement (effectively light AA that doesn't have ATG capability)
- 152mm coastal guns (you won't get 10, but then the Allies won't get 40 DUKWs either! ;-))
- 3 Vorpostenboote
- Fw190s
- Puma recons
- 251/1s and trucks

Shouldn't we give you some tanks too? Were PzIVs available in Dieppe in '42? Or is it just PzIIs, IIIs and early version StuGs???

No the Panzers and Waffen SS were just reinforcements to be used if the Garrison was about to fall apart. Anyway how are you going to get the Canadian Stuart's on shore they didn't have DD's in 1942. Are you going to go with what Slitherine did with Operation Husky on "Cleaning the Beach" with every elapsed amount of time a landing craft shows up with Tanks in em?as for tanks on both sides Germans should have Panzer IVs Panzer 3s and Stug A's all 1940 era and Canadians should have Primaly Stuarts with them but with your imaganitan who says we can't make a Flamethrowing Stuart to even it out a but 8)

Based on LandMarine's comments, plus what I've seen around the web, I'm estimating Allies would go with...
- a mix of infantry regulars, engineers, commandos, scouts (did they have PIATs in '42?)
- Vickers MG? What's the Brit/Canadian equivalent of a MG34?
- Stuarts (LandMarine, is this the M3 or the M5 version in '42?) plus Churchills (not strictly historical but could be nice and allow a mix of Crocs and regular Churchills)
- DUKWs
- Hunt class destroyers (6 of HMS Albrighton, Berkeley, Bleasdale, Brocklesby, Calpe, Fernie, Garth, Polish destroyer ORP Slazak)
- Bangor class minesweepers (6 of HMS Blackpool, Blyth, Eastbourne, Felixstowe, Ilfracombe, Rhyl, Stornoway, Tenby)

LM, Are these M3 Starts in '42? Or D-Day style M5s? Makes quite a difference to armour and firepower

PS. Don't forget the Churchill tanks. There seemed to be a lot of them leftover on the beach for the Germans to examine...

Hard to say.... But going against all these better German tanks how about a mix of M5's and M3's. No PAIT's showed up in 1943 so maybe use Boys AT Rifles. Don't forget that some US Rangers were with the Canadians and a fair amount of Commandos. As for the the MG's use Vickers and Brens. But Royal Marines were present so maybe 4 or 5 Regulars should have 125 Morale and Name is Royal Marines. Forgot they had Churchill's back in 42' yes add them :)

If the Wiki OOB above is correct, then the Germans didn't actually get (or need) to deploy any tanks or SS...

The following German formations were available as reserves, but did not actually participate in the battle:
676th Infantry Regiment of the 332nd Static Infantry Division
10th Panzer Division
SS Infantry Brigade Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler

They managed to kick ass with just the seven regiments of 302 Static Infanterie Div:

Defence of the coast at Dieppe was the 302.Infanterie-Division under the command of Generalleutnant Konrad Haase. This division was assigned to LXXXI.Armee-Korps, Army Group D.
302nd Static Infantry Division
570th Infantry Regiment
571st Infantry Regiment
572nd Infantry Regiment
302nd Artillery Regiment
302nd Reconnaissance Battalion
302nd Antitank Battalion
302nd Engineer Battalion
216th Battery
813th Battery
2/770 Army Coastal Battery
Heavy Flak group

Now this is my Plan
Armor (Tanks Jeeps Bren Carriers etc.) should arrive in Landing Craft like is Operation Husky.
Allies should have some 40-50 Total Units about 35 should be Infantry and about a fourth should be Commandos, Rangers and regulars changes to Royal Marines with more Morale and Explosives. Another fourth should be MG's and some Mortars and the rest Regulars Scouts Engineers. Of course some 10-15 Allied Ships and Every infantry unit should arrive either with the Armor or the DUKW's. I don't think you should use WirbelWinds but use the other 1940 AA cannon with speed reduced to about 16 or 20. That's about it for what I can think of ill keep you updated with what I find.

Happy to add a couple of Rangers (nice to have the alternative accents, lol! ;-))... I believe it was approximately 50 Rangers, 1,000 Royal Marines, 5,000 Canadians...

Oh and PS when making the map itself make sure that the beach is heavily fortified with Bunkers and Sandbags etc.

Don't worry... Our beaches will be fortified (if you look carefully, there are 4 large bunkers, 2 open bunkers already in place)... but not to the point where the map is impossible...

Nobody will play as Allies if it's an automatic death...
