Disbanding for Prestige?

The Light Cruiser issue in the Italian Offensive scenario prompted me to question the mechanic of being able to disband units for prestige.

It is something I have never done & don't quite see the logic in it.
The unit is not really yours to 'sell' as such.
I suppose it represents bartering one unit for another?

Whenever I am short of prestige I use a cheat for a modest amount to keep me going.
I try & view it as an emergency bail out.
