Stress and how to escape into a wargame

Post by MrsWargamer »

Ok we all have stress in our lives, and I am suuuuuuure no exception.

I DO occasionally lament a variety of elements connected to wargaming, and often I have said 'to hell with it' and gone to hide among my model collection.

But, today, well I am fed up with my life's stress sources :)

And I can't make models all the time all day every day (you run out of room among other things).

Going to treat myself to a print out of the tutorial, and the US letter size version of the War in the East manual, and regardless of how ridiculously massive this game is, and how it is likely it will take me near all day to play the first turn, if I am lucky, the thing is, I plan to 'disappear' into my game. Sure I can't claim to have a board to ponder over like I would prefer.

But, then again, maybe I will. Going to look into seeing how much it would cost me to get them to print out the game map in full mega splendour if I can figure out how to get the file to the printer. I won't be able to play the game this way of course, but, at least I'd have the map to stare at :)

Sounds like a great plan, just make sure you have the beers and peanuts to hand

I prefer beer and cookies and chocolate almonds myself. Nothing is so satisfying as Dare brand Simple Pleasures type cookies, I like the Digestives the most.

Managed to get the manual done, I had them do the tutorial, and then the US Letter Size file and had it spiral bound with a card stock divider between the tutorial and the main manual. Combined count of 40 pages plus 327 pages so it's basically a 1" thick item. Black and white as colour is not vital (and would cost a ridiculous sum). My cost, 30 minutes wait (well I went for a walk to another store in my case) and 26 bucks CAD done at a real office supplier (as opposed to a chain location). The reason I like the location is the girls there actually know what they are doing, for instance they took the tutorial file and made the images fit to size of page rather than just leave them small like they would have been.

I have both an Asus 10" transformer tablet and a 7" Nexus tablet, and so what. They are best used when you have no choice eh. NOTHING beats a print manual. I use electronic only when I need to leave the home and can't carry a real one with me. Personally, I'd pay 10 bucks (well realistically it would likely cost 20-30 bucks) for a printed colour copy of the manual for WitE bound in hard cover if Slitherine felt like marketing it. But I also understand Slitherine Group doesn't have access to a print company and can't fill that request the way a company based on selling print books (like Wizard's of the Coast aka D&D can).

But it would sure be nice to have. The cost to get it done independently though is higher than my need threshold. B&W does fine.

DSWargamer,

PDF manuals give you the ability to search terms and they are (sort of ok) to read. But I miss just being able to take the manual to bed with me and have a good read before going to sleep. That's a good way to unwind after a stressful day.

Oh, and beer and pizza for me.

Best wishes,
Steve
