Norway

Post by timek28 »

I've just started playing PC original game again. In the second mission - Norway I come to a well known feature of the game, yet it manifests a bit different. AI spawns new infantry units around victory hexes almost all the time (that is around ANY victory hex). I remember AI doing this if he has only one victory hex left. However I don't think I remember him doing that on any victory hex... Did anyone alse have this problem? And what did you do about it? Drop paratroopers close to victory hex? It is possible but they would probabbly get mutilated by 3 neighbouring AI infantry units.

It is especally frustrating since two northest cities are very hard to get to by land. Paratroopers and some naval bombardment are the only option for quicker action. But as soon as I destroy one Noregian infantry unit the next one appears. Right now I'm going logically for DV, but it is really hard (9 turns must be left). And I'm not sure even weather it is worth that much effort as I read somewhere that DV here brings less prestige than a MV?!? Getting a MV on the other hand surely won't be that hard.

DV in Norway is a major pain in the ass. It is possible but as you described due to the terrain and the harsh time limit for a DV you need a lot of luck with combat rolls and weather.

Paratrooper attack actually never worked for me as early there are always remains of th Royal Navy lurking there around bombing my paratroopers to dust. When my Navy is ready to take on the Royal Navy the AI usually had reinforced the city by then. What i use is the good old sledgehammer strategy. Surround the cities using sea transports to land some of your units on the peninsula, then just pound them to the ground with naval bombardment and your artillery and move a tank adjacent to the city to stop the AI from buying units there. If the tank is sufficiently back up by artillery it should withstand any counterattack. Just pray it doesn't get forced to retreat as this leads to the AI instantly buying another unit.

I personally never bother to go for the DV. The mission after is same no matter which outcome and you actually even gain 200 less prestige for a DV then for a MV. But tbh even without the difference the amount of risk and loses involved in getting a DV do not justify going for it unless of course you want it as personal achievement.

Tarrak thanks for the answer :)

I already had in mind some experienced player will be saying this is an easy mission, but it appears that it is not. So I will most definatelly go for a MV. There is too much risk of great losses trying to achieve a DV. On the other hand AI spawining here is a bit out of control and unrealistic, but I guess designers wanted it to be that way...

Moving on to next scenario...

Well i bet there are people here that can pull it off better then me. I know there are quite a few people a lot better at PC then me. It is not easy tho unless you're are REALLY good. As a side note: I tried the Norway mission today after i wrote the answer again to see how it behaves with the newest patch changes and i missed the DV by two turns. With a bit more luck with weather so i could use my air superiority more i could have probably pulled it off but as i said ... i usually can't be arsed. :)

Its been a while since i played Norway but If your gonna try a para drop send a couple of units and make sure their fully equipped when they land. Scout the area with fighters first to gain air superiority and land clear of the target to regain organisation on the ground. Then send in strong luftwaffe support (level bombers and tactical) and probably the Kriegsmarine as well to keep the Royal Navy occupied (even if its just for a diversion or suicide run). Keep the boys in rough terrain and look out for enemy artillery (including ships) that could outgun your assault.

I gave up trying to win DV in Norway on FM difficulty. However following mission also requires 9 turns to be left for DV... Arghhhhhh :/

Hehe Norway was already a pain in the ass in good old Panzer General :) I was actually expecting it to be the same in PzC ;) I managed it but yeah this is definitely one of those mission where the weather can really screw you up.
