Players need help in the Boston area!
O.K. Here it goes. I have the beta test rules. We all got together and we gave it a try, and boy oh boy what a mess. I heard that the rules were simple (I don't think so!) and also have a nice flow (Yeah, if you do crack daily!). Now I see the possibilties that this game could have, and maybe with some illustrations it would make things clearer, but I don't see this being the easy game it is proclaimed to be. Now I want to be wrong about this. I want to be able to play this game. I NEED a rule set that supports some of the army's I have or want to have and I think this could be it, so I'm giving it a chance.
With that said is there anyone out there in the metro Boston area who is willing to run a demo game for our lost little band of wargamers? Please help. I wanted to play at Coldwars, but there is no way I would be ready by then with out some help.
Thank you,
Vorbeck

Yes, I find that the rules play very simply. In addition, I think that the text is written very clearly and concisely. Of course, once the diagrams are in the published edition, it will be that much simpler. That said, this game is a bit more complicated I'm sure than that people used to Warhammer 40K, Warmachine, and Flames of War are used to. Of course, once you get a couple of games under your belt, the basic mechanics are really not much more difficult than those systems, and there is nothing like all the special case rules you need to keep track of.
Bottom line, I can't imagine why anyone would think this is a complicated rules set.
Anyway, I know that there is a group of guys taking up FoG in the Boston area. My group games out of Manchester, CT - probably only an hour and forty-five minutes from downtown Boston, and just a couple of weeks ago we had a player down to do a demo type game with us. I'm sure somebody from Boston will jump in here that could help you out - if not, your group is always welcome to come down to Connecticut for a game/demonstration.
BTW - I plan on playing in the Cold Wars tournament. Wish it was 800 points though instead of 650.

The 650 point total was chosen for two related reasons: 1) we are all newbies and will undoubtedly encounter any number of situations new to us, and thus requiring reference to the rulebook; 2) the time slots available to us on Friday at Cold Wars are relatively short.pcelella wrote:BTW - I plan on playing in the Cold Wars tournament. Look for an 800 point tourney (or two) at Historicon.

That's fine with the 650 points. Didn't mean to be critical. I understood the reasons. It's just now that I'm putting together my list for Cold Wars, I'm having the usually difficult time deciding what I need to cut out.babyshark wrote:The 650 point total was chosen for two related reasons: 1) we are all newbies and will undoubtedly encounter any number of situations new to us, and thus requiring reference to the rulebook; 2) the time slots available to us on Friday at Cold Wars are relatively short.pcelella wrote:BTW - I plan on playing in the Cold Wars tournament. I'll definitely be at the Historicon tournament too.
This Cold Wars one should be crazy for me - I'm making a 5 hour drive down in the morning, hoping to arrive at 10, and then register and play at noon. I should be pretty played out by the end of the day, but know that I'll have a great time. Can't wait.

Several of the guys I know who are probably taking up FoG play at the Hobby Bunker too. You should check there for a game. Otherwise, I'd be happy to give you a game to show you the ropes (as well as I know them myself, that is). Send me an email and maybe we can work something out. I have a bunch going on this month, and Cold Wars soon, so it will be tough to get up to Boston myself until after Cold Wars. Can you come down to Manchester, CT? Another option, is on February 23 (on Saturday), a guy from Battlegroup Boston is coming down to the Time Machine to put on a large Command Decision game for our group (HAHGS - the Hartford Area Historical Gaming Society) that starts at 12:30 pm. If you're into WW2, you're welcome to attend that, or come in as we're wrapping things up, and I'd be happy to do a walk through game with you then.
Let me know if any of this works for you.

Galadrin - would you be interested in attending the HAHGS event at the Time Machine in Manchester, CT on 2/23? If so, I can send you more information. We could do a FoG game (just like with Vorbeck) after the WW2 stuff. I know there are several guys attending the event that also play FoG.Galadrin wrote:I could certainly show up at Hobby Bunker for large events. Regular trips would be less likely, however.
