Unusual Basing

Post by fukateesays »

Hi folks- I have based my stuff on 90mm wide bases ( for DBA/BBDBA) containing 5/6Legionaries, 5 to7 warband, 3 or 4 monted etc. I understand that the rules will work for any base width but I'm thinking about the sort of space I would need for a game.
The armies that I use are around 20 to 36 bases and mainly on foot (Celts, Marians, Germans and Spanish). Will these armies be big enough for FOG?
What do people think is a resonable minimum table size for these type of armies and how would this change if I get tempted to do Sassanids, Palmyrans and so on with all those cavalry and bowmen? I'm planning a 9'x5' table but how would I get on with a 6x4 ( I play DBA on a 5x5 at ther moment). Any thoughts welcome- except for rebasing!!!

20-36 bases of mainly infantry is quite small. A smaller (650 point) FOG infantry army might have 60 bases.

In terms of table size, 8x5 or 9x5 would be fine for a 650 point army, but I suspect 6x4 would be too small for 90mm bases - simply because it would be too easy to close off the flanks.

650/700 is normal for 25mm scale (60mm wide bases) on 6x4, so would work similarly on 9x5 for your bases - though I would double the size of a MU otherwise you will run into maneuverability and command radius problems. 36 bases of germans are likely to be about 250 points add say 150 points for generals which is about half of what you need. So you might be better sticking to the 5x5 table unless you get more figures.
The only real way is to experiment and see what works.

Thanks for the replies guys- sounds like it could work for me. Increasing the MU is the way forward -I do a similar thing in DBA which gives me a 'massive' 12cm bow range! Also, good suggestion-get more figures -I'd better get these armies up to 60 bases just to be sure. I love my big bases- they're just so chunky.

You could just treat each 90 mm base as two 40 mm bases side by side.

That's an interesting idea Lawrence- I hadn't thought of that. I haven't seen the rules in any format yet so I don't know the implications of this. Would it have an influence on the depth of battle groups? Maybe it could be the same as a 2 deep and 2 wide group which would give me BG's equivalent to 4 ,8 and 12 etc bases. Maybe I'm making this too complicated!! As Sagji suggests experimentation is the name of the game.

Or as 1 1/2 60mm bases - from the number of figures per base given I suspect the figures are 25mm rather than 15mm.
With sufficient new 60mm bases and some 30mm fillers it would be easy to then use it as a 60mm army - makin change from the larger bases when required.

..and that of course is the answer!!!! Thanks sagji-you're are a star.
My stuff is indeed 28mm mainly Foundry and Crusader,- mounted on 4mm ply - lots of scenic stuff going on- and now I can take them out against other people's 60mm stuff-brilliant! I must admit this afternoon I was thinking I'm going to have to climb a mountain to get 2 90mm based FOG armies ready -now I just need one.
It also occurs to me that the 'change' will give some standard base DBA armies but lets not worry about that here...
