SpAARta: The Duncanabasis...

Post by duncan »

This is an old AAR fo mine. Obviously, it is in spanglish and I messed with the names (I've got the spanish version of the game). It is still readable, though. Rescuing it from the old forums...

1.) Esparta version 1.013. (Esparta is the spanish name of the game)

2.) The Peloponnesian war scenario (hey, it was my fourth game, I did not want to get so much involved. I`m playing Grand Campaign now for the fourth time)

3.) Playing as Sparta (love those spartiates)

4.) Goals: Conquer 24 cities, including Mesenia, Olimpia & Corinth

5.) Difficulty: Hard (I'm not sure about it, I think It was pre-patch normal. Anyway, the middle difficulty setting)

It will be modeled (very) slightly as a Greek Tradegy. You have choirs (???). One of them (representing the people of Sparta) uses quotes from some well known rock group. Guess who (not the Canadian group, though). Hope no one will sue me for this.

Oh Muse, tell us the story of Enekomedes the Manumedian, king of Sparta, son of Manumedes, and how he conquered Peloponesse and led lacedemonians to olimpic glory. Many were his victories from up North down to the South of Greece. Let's start then...

Enekomedes was the son of Manumedes, who was sibling to Leonidas. When Leonidas was killed by the barbarians at Thermopylae and Pausanias went to fight at the battlefields of Platea, the young Enekomedes became king of Sparta. He was only fifteen. He grew up in Athena though and the spartans didn't rely on him. But Enekomedes was brave and smart and he knew he was the right man to lead the lakedemonians in hard times. And those were hard times for Sparta.

464 B.C. came. Enekomedes was helped by his loyal arcadian friend, Hipofilos, a great horseman. Enekomedes said to him:

"Tell me, Hipofilos, what are the cities of Lakedemonia. I spent so many years with the athenians and I don't recall my own country."

Hipoforos answered the following:

"Six are our cities, m'lord. Sparta, where the wheat grows, is the main one. Another is Prasia, in the east, good bricks are made there. Another is Githeion, iron is extracted there by our hilots. Another is Tainaron, with its marble and copper mines it supplies our army and our temples. Another is Limera, good bricks are made there too, it's in the southeast. Last but not least is our Jewel Of The South, Kithera. Bricks are made there."

Enekomedes then said this:

"We must promote our industries and make hilots work hard. We have to investigate many things. Only economical supremacy will lead us to a military victory"

As Enekomedes said, brick industry was improved in Prasia, Limera and Kithera, copper mines were built in Tainaron and farms in Sparta. Thousands of hilots worked there, under the menace of the spartans' whips. Enekomedes also sent diplomats to nearby polis: mesenians in the west, eleans to the northwest and arcadians up north, to befriend them before the betrayal Enekomedes was planning.

But before that Enekomedes had to win the spartans' for his cause and didn't start any military movement against any of their neighbours. He reunited a large group of wise man and locked them up at his Palace in Sparta until they researched everything about the copper and how to use it. This way the spears for the proto-hoplites were soon made at Sparta's blacksmithes.

In June 464, famine produced by an earthquake made the hilots revolt against their guardians. Hilots were defeated at Sparta, Prasia, Tainaron and Limera. More revolts came in July and August, when the hilots conquered Kithera. The spartan people didn't like Enekomedes and they called him "The athenian" and conspiracies were planned against him.

There you go, some hilots revolving near Sparta and Prasia. I defeated these, but not the following ones!!!. Hey, They were supposed to be slaves. just a little starvation won't hurt them THAT much

Everything seemed to go wrong for spartans. After losing the Jewel Of The South against the revolving hilots, the arcadians, ignoring the expensive presents the spartans sent not so long ago, went for Prasia. The garrison, mainly astynomia, defeated them at first, but a second attack was not repelled and the arcadians took the city. The spartan astynomia died with honour at the battlefield.

News arrived to Sparta, but Enekomedes was not worried about them. He turned his face to Hipofilos and said:

"??Is this the way the Arcadians thank me for my presents?"

Then Hipofilos said

"That was the way they threw me out of my hometown, Tegea, without a reason. The spartans' revenge will be sung in the future"

Enekomedes smiled

"We're not ready yet, Hipofilos. Hard times are coming, but we'll work them out. We are Heracles' son"

Enekomedes knew what he was saying. A peloponnesian people called acteans sailed the sea and conquered Limera in the South, killing the garrison and slaving the townspeople. Acteans attacked Githeion too and were defeated twice, but the third time the spartan garrison lost the battle and the city was ruled by the enemies, destroying the factories the saprtans built there.

Enekomedes' kingdom was reduce to three-cities kingdom. But the spartans had been busy and never stopped working hard. Lakedemonian researchers found out everything about copper, bricks, gold and food. From 452 B.C only spartiates were trained at Sparta's gymnos.

It was about time for a counter-attack. First, small armies comprising mainly proto-hoplites and psiloi javelinmen were send to take back the cities in the south. The acteans were being invaded by the arcadians son they weren't prepared for the spartans' rage. The proto-hoplites took Limera and the Githeion, defeating the acteans. With the bricks from those cities heavy infantry barracks were built in Sparta and light infantry barracks were erected in Limera, where the mighty thureophoroi were trained.

The people dind't called Enekomedes "The Athenian" anymore and they really believed he was like Leonidas, the hero at Thermopylae.

Choir 2

There's A Doctor In Town

Who Can Cure The Boy

But Enekomes wasn't confident enough. The mesenians had built a large kingdom in the north, almost defeating the arcadians. The eleans were strong too. But Enekomedes saw farther than any of the spartan rulers before, even Leonidas. He looked to the east. to the sea.

Hipofilos was horrified about that idea

"The spartans will never sail the sea. The sea was made for the athenians"

but the stubborn Enekomedes answered

"They will fight. They're proud and brave. Great treasure waits for us in the east. Let's go after it."

A small group of Thureophoroi beat the rebel garrison at Kithera. When the citizens of Kithera were trained as proto-hoplites they went to the east, seeking the gold that Enekomedes had promised for them.

The thureophoroi and proto-hoplite army sailed the sea, looking for the Ciclades jonian polis. They disembarked in Melos and fought well against the jonians, mainly astynomia and proto-hoplites, taking Melos. Melos had a gold mine to pay the expensive armies that Enekomedes wanted to raise back at Sparta. The mined gold was useful for statues too. The people would be happier having one of them in their temples. A Marble mine was destroyed, though, because Tainaron was full with marble mines at that moment and wasn't needed. The hilots worked hard extracting gold from the isle.

Not so far from Melos, the jonians dwelled another beautiful city called Paros, garrisoned by proto-hoplites and astynomia. Enekomedes knew about the danger of having an enemy city so close to Melos. He left Hipofilos at Melos and marched in front of his army, consisting of thureophoroi and thracians to Paros. A big battle was fought there. Knowing that teh thureophoroi wouldn't stand against the proto-hoplites' spears, he awaited the enemy in rough terrain, where the jonian spearmen would fight clumsily. Thureophoroi beat the enemy's proto-hoplites, while the thracians defeated the astynomia. Sparta was victorious once again and the city was taken. But it was a hard fight and Enekomedes and his men were exhausted.

Image

Real hard battle against the jonians, but I managed to win keeping my thureophoroi army in rough terrain waiting for the proto-hoplites, and sending the thracians ("tracios") against the enemy's astynomia. Good fight, I almost felt proud of my soldiers!!! Specially those who killed 92 enemies...)

AUGUST 450

I'm doing diplomatically well. Peloponnese is rather peaceful (not in the north, but it doesn't matter that much, they're too far from my cities). I can concentrate on the tricky jonians now. But keeping two fronts is a lot harder (more than twice, I promise you) than fighting only in one direction.

AUGUST 450

Political situation centered in the newly conquered cities. Look, some jonian proto-hoplites are trying to take Melos back. Fools!. Everyone knows that we are the red ones!!!!!! Prasia isn't mine but it will be, I promise you. Lots of marble for me. Thank You.

After taking Paros and Melos from the jonians, Enekomedes wanted to stop the spartan expansion towards the east. Sparta had conquered two rich cities, very far from the potential enemies that Sparta might have in the Peloponnese. Fourteen year of non-stop war had exhausted Sparta's treasure and it was about time to rest from fighting. Enekomedes and Hipofilos met the ephoros to tell them the war was over and a long, prosperous peace was about to begin.

Then a messenger came and he said to the king

"Oh, king of spartans. The jonian army are heading toward Paros. The proto-hoplites will be soon at our city"

Enekomedes didn't move a single muscle of his face, while the ephoros shouted

"Dead to the jonians"

"NO!!!"

said Enekomedes, waving his hand.

"The jonians fought well defending their cities and it's understandable their intention to take them back. But it's important for Sparta to keep this places in the Ciclades. Because I have a plan to conquer Argos and destroy the argives, who defeated us many times in the past. But in order to conquer Argos, we need the gold and silver from the Clicades' mines. The argives' hoplites defending Argos are tougher than enemy we have encountered before. We'll need the best spartiates to defeat them. And to take the spartiates up to Argos we'll need gold and silver. These will pay the armour of our warriors and will buy the silence of the people we'll meet on our way to the argives' polis. This way we'll take them by surprise"

"Let's send a diplomat to the Clicades and let's buy the jonians' love with expensive presents, while defending Paros and Melos from their attacks. Soon they'll recognize us as their superiors"

Hipofilos said then

"Let's build some walls there. The jonians will never succed if we defend the cities protected by walls"

Enekomedes said

"Sparta doesn't build walls, Hipofilos. We'll defeat those proto-hoplites in the open field or we'll die. That's the law of Sparta"

In September 447, the thureophoroi army won a battle against the jonian army. Enekomedes was their leader. This quietened the jonians and they retreated back to their isles. Enekomedes was exultant. A heir had born in Sparta.

The elite spartiates led by Enekomedes and helped by some light skirmishers units fought for Sparta against the argives in the battle of Argos in November 443. Dilios the young was the best spartan fighter that glorious day. Sparta won and only 7 spartiates died that day. Argos was conquered. The taxes' income increased a lot and lakedemonians had the money to conquer the Peloponnese. The rich city of Corinth was Enekomedes' next target. But thins got worse for Lakonia.

It was not Corinth. The jonians, using the silver the spartans had given them, recruited two large armies and attacked Paros and Melos simultaneously in January 440. In Paros, the spartans resisted two times in two hard battles, but the attack took Melos' garrison by surprised. Everyone fought well but they died as the spartiates led by Leonidas did 40 years ago and a monument was erected in Melos for them. More jonian armies surrounded Paros. The situation was critical.

Enekomedes was informed of Melos' fall and took a boat as soon as he could. He left Dilios in charge of the spartiates army of Argos. He arrived to Paros in september 440 and conquered Naxos in december. The spartan revenge had only started. The jonians leaders in Naxos were hung by Enekomedes himself and their dead bodies were exposed for weeks in the market place. That was the fate of anyone who dared to insult Sparta. The Enekomedes' rage was terrible and even Hipofilos opted to stay out of his way.

Enekomedes took Melos back soon after. All Melos' men were sent to the gold mines as slaves. Every men has a jonian soldier's dead body chained to their ankle.

The spartans' offensive was nearly unstoppable and Enekomedes' rage had no end. Even the mighty Heracles would not stop the spartan hoplites that conquered Delos in May 439, defeating the elite hoplites garrisoned there.

Image

My diplomat had pressed our proxeno and I did know the actual composition of jonians' capital city's garrison. I sent the smallest army I thought could defeat them, because I had to leave some of my armies to do garrison duties. Missed those Spartiates, far away in Argos...

Situation in May 439. I already had splitted the jonian territory in two, so everything was a lot easier from then. But still too many battles to fight...remember I must conquer Olympia, Mesenia and Corinth. We're starting...but things are getting better.

The jonians were brave fighters and they tried a counter-attack, without success. In October 438 a spartan army went to Andros North of Delos, making a big mistake. Only two young pro-hoplites armies were left as garrison back in Delos and the jonians saw great oportunities and defeated them. Enekomedes had to go from Naxos and took the city back. Then the general who made the mistake was killed by Enekomedes himself. The jonian war was getting to a pleasant end. Only Thera in the south was resisting the spartans.

Hipofilos said

"Great victory, Enekomedes"

Ephoros said

"You have lead Sparta to glory"

Enekomedes wasn't satisfied and said

"Peloponnese is what I wanted to conquer, not a bunch of jonians in the east. But we're not ready yet. Our spartiates are few and we haven' t got enough silver. Let's built some markets and let the merchants from Tiro, Egypt and Sicily come to do some business in our town."

After building the markets, the spartans sailed again the seas and marched to Thera. They laid siege and conquered it in November 435. The Ciclades were peaceful once again.

Image

The battle for Thera is about to begin. They outnumbered my army but the flanks resisted while my center troops broke their army in two. Then I made two melees, my troops surrounding theirs. Nice victory.

Enekomedes said to Hipofilos

"Hipofilos my faithful one, time has come to bring back to Sparta the glory that our ancestors won at Plataia and Thermopylae and Pausanias lost when he became mad. It's time to conquer the entire Peloponnese"

But Hipofilos knew about peace and not about war, so he said

"Don't. For the first time since you raised to the throne, there's no battle ahead for your spartiates. Your people are tired, they've been fighting for three decades and they have even sailed the sea. But they're hungry and cold and you'll have to take care of them. After that, you'll lead the troops again."

It is said that Enekomedes smiled when he heard that and take breath. Enekomedes went back to Sparta with his son and his wife, while Hipofilos was busy building schools and temples and improving the industry. The spartan diplomats made then a dream come true: The Peloponnesian league was formed in 434, securing the western spartan border.

Image

There you go, the Peloponessian league in green. My spartans are safe...for a while. The euboians seem dangerous in the north of the Ciclades, but this will change with a little help from our gold.

Image

We spartans don't build walls with bricks...we build them out of copper.

In 422 Enekomedes was old and he felt his death was approaching, so he started a campaign agains the acteans, southeast of Argos, who had been making trouble in Sparta's frontier. Dilios went from the north with a mixed army comprising Cretans skirmishers and tough spartiates to protect them, well seasoned in lots of battles. Meanwhile, Leonidas son of Enekomedes attacked from the south in his triremes, catching the acteans between two fires. Dilios took Epidauro in April, and lots of wood were collected there for spartans' armies in the following years. In May, Leonidas took Hermion in the south. Then he headed towards acteans only remaining city, Troizen

Image

The war against acteans was the first blitzkrieg...The acteans weren't rich but they were always menacing Argos and Prasaia so I decided to fight them. Nasty people, but enough of them. More battles shall to be fight

What About The Boy???

What About The Boy???

Enekomedes knew what would be his next objective before even finishing the war against the acteans. Corinth was in his mind. Sparta and Lakedaimondidn't need anything: they had gold mines, silver mines, they had food, and marble, copper and wood, they had iron and they didn't need horses anyway. But Leonidas swa the madness in his father's eyes when Enekomedes told him he was going to Corinth to conquer the city.

"Let's leave the people from Corinth alone. They did no harm."

Enekomedes raged

"??And you call yourself Leonidas?"

Dilios' spartiates marched to Corinth and they defeated the corinthians in January 420. Then, Enekomedes started yet another war against the phokis in Megara. Leonidas met Hipofilos in Argos, while Enekomedes was resting in Sparta.

"Tell me, Hipofilos ??What is making my father want to conquer so many countries? Sparta is feared amongst both greeks and barbarians. Let's not turn this fear into rage"

Hipofilos said then

"Your father has only one thing in his mind and I realized too late. Athens is his dream, he wants to conquer Athens at any cost. This way, he'll not be ashamed of being called "the athenian" by his fellow spartans. He was young and strong when they started calling him that, but now he's old and weak and he cannot stand it anymore. Only the conquest of Athens will shut up this little voice in his mind"

At the end of 416, the war against Phokis began, the armies led by Dilios again. The spartans took Sikyon in december, assuring the ishtmus. Then, Dilios turned north and sieged Pellene, conquering it in March 415.

Image

Dilios and his close friends awaiting the enemy in most favourable terrain, as usual. Great general. Everyone in Sparta loves you...except mad Enekomedes. My cretans would decimate enemies before arriving. Then spartiates would finish the job. Simple tactic, but it was one of my first games...and it worked allright. Some people in other forums mess with the tactics a lot and they're not satisfied with the Spartan battles. They're aproaching them the wrong way in my opinion. With the tools available it is posibble to win uneven battles and have fun. Read some Herodotus carefully and you'll learn a lot.

Leonidas was sure about his father's next objective. It was Megara in the isthmus. Megarians were friends with spartans, but that was not enough for Enekomedes' ambition. Leonidas and Hipofilos went to Korinth, where 160 spartiates were garrisoned, and tried to convince them not to go to war.

But spartiates didn't want to hear about not going to war. They had been trained by Enekomedes to fight, not to make peace. And they didn't understand Leonidas and Hipofilos' reasons for not attacking Megara.

We're not Gonna Take It

And Enekomedes knew about his son's betrayal and imprisoned him in the deepest dungeon of Enekomedes' Palace at Sparta. Then one of his diplomats revealed secret information about the garrison at Megara. Dilios attacked the city in January 414. It was a bloody battle: spartiates against astynomia and some elite hoplites. Then Dilios disembarked in Salamis, in January 413. LEonidas was dying in prison when Dilios conquered the city for Enekomedes.

Hipofilos was executed in the beginning of 412, drinking the poison Enekomedes himself brought for him. End of this year saw spartans' armies marching towards Athens, conquered by Dilios in december. Dilios didn't tear down any monument or temple, as Enekomedes had ordered and he also didn't kill any of the athenian bosses. Enekomedes went mad and his own spartiates guard killed Dillios.

Big armies were recruited in Argos and Sparta. Enekomedes was at odds with his allies and he wanted to show them who was the leader of the League. He said to his counselors

"The next olympic games are goig to be held at Lakedaimon"

Then he laughed too loud and everybody laughed. But the counselors were scared, they feared Enekomedes' rage. Messene was conquered in July 418 and the same month Olympia was taken by the spartans too.

Image

Olympic death. I felt pity for those poor astynomia charging like the aussies in "Gallipoli" film. The formation used here is absolutely stupid, but I was so much bigger than them that I played a little with the formations to make a nice and uselees figure.

Enemodes was preparin his journey to Olympia to host the first spartan's olympic games when a messenger aproached him saying that Leonidas was found dead in his dungeon at Sparta. Messenger then ran from him, fearing Enekomedes rage, but, suddenly, Enekomedes felt down on the floor and while everybody (including his wife and his counselors) was looking at him, he looked up and said

"Zeus, What Have I Done?"

And he died. Enekomedes got what he wanted , but he never had what he needed. He was 82 years old.
