The battle was already in my favor after deployment. Strangely the open map had a big forest in the middle, which ironically was to my advantage despite my ranged superiority and Morbio choosing the map. The forest hampered the movement of his army, and by the time the other half got to combat, it was already too late, thanks to me positioning most of my army in roughly the same place where they could wail upon the Syracusans with numerical superiority..

Out of the 1000s of hobbies out there is there any that never finishes on time!

Round 2 will now begin 23rd March and finishes 13th April

Round 3 14th April and finishes 5th May

1 week extension.

The unfinsihed 1st round game will end on Sunday, if no result it will be a draw.

I should have made this call before but having a quick look at previous CC, most games were completed on time, with a handful running over end time. So never thought it would be taking so long.

Everybody should be able to play 1 turn a day

Team captains any thoughts on what should be done to make sure games are finsihed on time? Just pm me.

From my point of view I thought the Athenian's had an advantage in MF so their strategy would be to seize the two hills (ruined pyramids!) and from there attack the Egyptian flanks while bringing up the hoplites in the centre. My analysis proved correct as Lysi tried to do just that. My response was to let him have the left hill, putting a guard of spears and archers at the base to dissuade him from coming down.

The right hill however might be worth trying to capture, using the impassible terrain as an anchor. But this strategy would only work if I could hold off Lysi's 2 MF and cavalry. It fell to my defensive spear sub general to singlehandedly hold the pass at the top of the mountain. It was a gamble because the enemy MF and armoured cav are both at a big advantage in the rocky terrain.

Luckily for me Lysi sent his cav on a wide sweep around the mountain (which ultimately was neutralised by spearmen blocking the pass), relying solely on his 2 MF to push my general aside and set upon my flank. And it would have worked if my general had not performed heroics and killed both MF and a supporting HF one after the other, allowing the Egyptians on the lower slopes to push back the rest of the Athenian assault.

On the left the two flanks glared at each other and swapped bowfire, the Athenians on the hill, the Egyptians on the flat.

In the centre after the preliminary skirmish of LF and MF archers, the two lines clashed. The Egyptians had more men, a higher ranking general and better dice. Aided by the right flank winning their fight on the hill and setting about rolling up the Athenian flank sealed the battle for the 'Old Crocodile' who that evening dined on young Athenian lion flesh!

Thank's to ianiow for a really well tuned reading of the battle.
Just one specification about my plan.
The wide sweep of the 4 cavalry units was intended more to pin down 6/8 opponent BGs, removing them from the centre, rather than actually forcing a way to the rear of his army (and they did their job quite well). Having them placed forcing a way through the pass would have meant leaving them to impale on the defensive spears of the Egyptians, without great gains.

The fate of the battle then was really sealed in the centre were, beside dices, the presence of an Inspired Commander proved decisive!

But, you Britons, shouldn't celebrate too much, 'cause the other European Commanders are ready to take revenge of the poor Athenians!

Seriously, I understand your outburst to a degree. I sometimes felt the same last CC.
But do you really mean to bail out as a player? I would say that will probably torpedo this edition of CC beyond repair...

Had a very good nights sleep but feel the same way. LOEG got me started and CC has continued with the lack of courtesy from numerous players now, with reference to not contacting me with explanations of slowness.

To be perectly honest I am thinking of going on a sabbatical from LOEG, completely.

I am not entirely sure players reaslise how much of our free time we put into these comps and that is what gets me "angry" or "irked":)

Everybody talks of limited time to play due t work commitments etc but I have been doing it and also organising.

You are prob right about dropping out as a player though. So if some other masochist wishes to run CC so be it. Started on 17 March with Aristides and 1 turn completed!!

The more I think about it the angrier I become, especially my free time.

just want to say how much i DO appreciate your generous heart as well as endourance when it comes to herding a very knarley bunch of ally cats and rodents. without your hard efforts much of the excellent gameplay and commradre we've all enjoyed would not be. I have been involved (and am currently) in similar (non-game) endeavors, and it is taxing and not always appreciated. My advice would be to take a break, but with an offer to mentor some other brave soul. hopefully that individual exists out there somewhere. at the moment it ain't me i'm sorry to say.
