Indeed... But in order to make the icon somewhat different I put three standing figures instead of two standing and one kneeling soldier... If you or someone else has some suggestion for other "difference" to add to the icon, I will try to implement it. I will try to think about this also... May be the regulars icon can be made with two standing soldiers with rifles (longer barrel than the PPSh-41 SMG) plus the kneeling soldier...

Ok, here is the Soviet_regular icon modified with all the soldiers carrying rifles, in order to make them more distinct from SMG Infantry. Tell me what do you think...

This looks very good, different enough. UPDATE: ...althrough I don't see a real difference between my Regular version and yours.
But the rifle barel of the PPSH still looks very same at the SMG squad. So I have the following idea: the figures with the hand grenade throwing would be the SMG (with correct PPSHs) and the figures with LMG would be the Guards.
What do you think?

OK here are my latest versions: SMG's and Guards modified only that I gave the PPSH in their hands. For me they will be good enough from now.
ACHTUNG: names have to be renamed to "soviet_guards.png" and "soviet_smg.png" to use them properly.

Fair enough! I think we obtained a very good result, giving more flavour to this marvellous game!
Re: More different Soviet Inf/Guard/SMG units + Ski Inf
After some trial and error I also attempted to make some new Soviet infantry icons. My aim was to make new icons which can use the existing animiations, while still differing from each other.
I left the regular infantry largely unchanged, just made the SMG a bit more similar to the PPSH with the box magazine:

The new SMG infantry has two kneeling figures to differentiate this unit from the above a bit more, while still using the vanilla SMG inf animation:

The new Soviet Guards icon has a grenade throwing figure to differentiate it from all the above. This one uses the bicycle infantry animation:
