Dragoon's rolling thread

Post by Dragoon. »

I will continuously update this thread with my impression about the game. I will avoid reading other people threads until I finished my first two games. I don't want become knowingly or unknowing influenced by others opinions and experiences until I made my own.
I will be typing this while playing game. Because of this it will look and sound chaotic as I type whatever just come to my mind. All spelling and grammatically errors (there will be a lot) are placed deliberately for you to find and keep. You're welcome.

To describe myself as CIV player. I'm a builder. I love to build and develop a legacy. Creation over destruction. Usually I rather react to violence than initiate it. At least versus the AI. Exception are when I choose to role play an usurper or just pick a militant faction. However there are exception like in Civ4/5 where going to the first war right away was essential on higher difficulty. If you wanted to survive you had to wiped out the next AI player as soon as possible. But this is violence out of necessity not desire.

Installation
Installation went smooth. Liked the auto-completion for a new set installation path. Convenient if you don't have to create and name new folders. I did not like that saves are stored in ..\user\appdata\.. , I prefer ..\documents\my games\ .

First plus. Game starts in desktop resolution and here comes my first wish. I have a dual display setup. I would love a borderless window option.
Went strait to settings. Switch to windowed mode and my custom resolution of 1792x1008 (my native is 1920*1200).
The background music is good. Not loud or intrusive. The click confirmation ping sound is a bit cheap as in low bit rate. I mean the sound that plays when clicking on Gameplay/Video/Audio tabs, not when clicking on ratio boxes or OK button.

My first game
I like the main menu background screen epically the animated tree to the right. Nice graphics. What wonderful world it could be if the name Pandora would not cast such a dark omen on it. By the way is the name Pandora not used a bit much lately for planets? The moon in Avatar and of course Borderlands comes immediately to my mind. Well the old Greeks and their mythology are quite popular I guess. Traditionally most solar space bodies get names from the Greek mythology. So lets be OK with that for now.
Lets proceed to set foot on the first human woman... err I mean the planet named after her of course. :roll:

I hope the game lobby screen will get more stylish in the future. Not just a simple window with drop down boxes embedded. Why not have for each faction a head, icon or symbol displayed instead, and then have the faction traits shown in a window below like it was in Alpha Centauri. If you can afford a voice actor, I don't mind if a voice over narrating the faction ideology or goals.

Lets take a look at the factions how I see them.
We got: Solar Dynasty, developers.
Scholars of Eden, unscrupulous scientist.
Terra Salvum, environmentalist.
Divine Ascension, religious zealot.
Imperium, warmongers (hmm unit strength balanced by upkeep. Guess I have to keep conquer and pillage to finance my army? They are already my choice for the second game.)
Noxium Corporation, capitalist.

I go with 5 easy AIs. I will play the Scholars of Eden (Don't like the faction name though. Eden sounds more like religious zealots than forward looking scientist. How about Scholars of Quantum, ..the (event) Horizon, Planck, Relativity).
In my first game I usually prefer factions with research bonus to get a knowledge of the tech tree as fast as possible, and hopefully compensate my inexperience with powerful tech.
Size large. (To avoid early contact. Want some time to myself developing and learning before dealing with diplomacy.)
Shape Continents. (Usually I prefer Pangaea because to be honest most game AIs don't handle well naval invasions and exploration. Thus if there is a lot of water the AI is usually handicapped. Although isolated AIs allow for a more peaceful game.)
Temperature default (temperate). (Some tooltip that explain what the different effects are would be nice.)
Alien Aggression High. (In Alpha Centauri I liked to have a lot of fungus and mind worms. The extra pressure and the struggling spiced up the game for me. You could call it the frontier experience. Strangely I found the barbarians in Civ games highly annoying, as in they preventing me from enjoying the early game. But in Alpha Centrauri, where mind worms have the same function, they don't bother me as much. I think the difference is that barbarians are faceless and generic, while fungus and mind worms have a story behind them that is unrevealed during course of the game. In the end the relationship can even change to that they become virtually my allies. As Gaians I embraced fungus. As Morganites I reveled destroying it.

..and here we go. "Hello Doctor Schreiber"
Ok, lets stop right here. First I'm not a doctor I'm a professor of course. Such insolence ;) But you can address me as dean or faculty director Schreiber if you prefer.

Lets explore the screen...
Tile graphics looks good and detailed but are a bit dark for my taste. Increase gamma? Interface is of course work in progress. I like background music. Is there one for each faction?
Everywhere tool tips. Hurray. The way it should be. My colonial troopers look like serious business. Nice for a change that my first unit does not look bums. Nice water effect. Smooth zoom with the mousewheel.
Ah, Xenite Flowers and I get a direct link to the help entry. Now you just need a fancy name for Help. Datalinks is already occupied by Alpha Centrauri so we have to go with Pancyclopedia? Damn! Just googled to find out Pandorapedia is already taken by Avatar. To hell with you James Cameron. :wink:
Some game concepts in help would be nice. In general the help window should be bigger or even scale automatically based on your resolution. You could give it a minimum size and then scale the window on a percentage for larger resolutions. Some transparency on the help window saves you the need for background picture.

Big thanks for the workshop. One of my favorite features in Alpha Centauri. Adaptive modular unit design is the future.

I'm playing in a window so there is no edge scroll. You could add it non the less, but you have included scrolling via holding down left mouse button.

Research window
Would you consider add a blind research option like it was in Alpha Centauri? In the beginning hated it and wanted to pick all my research. Once I knew the game inside out and kept wining with ease I started to play with blind research for a more challenging and surprising experience. I had to adapt my playstyle based on the tech I got presented.

I go with Colony Ship Dismantling as my first tech. From the description it sound like I will receive a boost to my initial colonization efforts.

City screen...
Again everything is explained with tooltips. The statistics are broken down to show each factor. Some are shown as "other sources". I don't like that. Be concrete. Tooltip is missing for the population classes.Non the less everything is well designed.
Aha, I can move pop around via drag 'n' drop. Figuring out how production works. I need to mine and process minerals which then are exchanged for production? For now the rate is 1 minerals 1 production. A tutorial pop-up explaining production would been nice.

I will go with my standard build queue for now. 2 troops (1 defense, 1 more for exploration) colony pod, former. Would be nice if we could save and import build queues.
So far I like the layout of the city screen. it pretty much the standard layout seen in other games.

Good unit preview window with detailed information and tooltips.

Random wish. Choose a more interesting start date than January 2100.

Turn 2: A ruin discovered. How exciting.

Turn 3: My first tech. Colony Ship Dismantling. +20 minerals. I will use them to fast produce my first settler later. Remember in AC how each tech came along with a quote. If you got time and mind? I found this quotes, often given by other faction leaders, added to the game immersion. (Scrap that. Saw many techs later have them) Some of the quotes even encouraged me to read the source to know more. Like the quotes from Nietzsche, Kant and John Milton in AC.
Explored the ruin. +10 research, New terrain found Hot springs. I really like you artwork.
Xenomorph hive spotted. Doh! 3 hexes from my city. Nasty looking critters. Like a venus fly trap on legs. Did you know in AC native life forms received a combat debuff the first few turns. Just saying. :)
Hmm, 3 of them camping the hive and they stronger than my trooper. Going to pump out forces until they are gone. "Damn humans. They barely set foot on these new lands and already the killing start again."

Turn 4: Argh. The Xenomorphs rushed my trooper but I missed the combat because the new research discovered window pop-up blocked my view. That has to change. Wait with all pop-ups until all combat & movement is resolved.

Lets stop here and summarize my first impressions.

Installation was smooth. Auto complete new path. Game starts in desktop resolution. Perfect.

Music is good a bit trance like. Main menu background looks astonishing good and it's even animated.
The interface looks bleak and plain and I'm quite whiny about it. I guess still work in progress. The Help window is bad. Too small. Each category should have it's own tab or button instead to dump everything into this drop down box. At least I can scroll the text with my mousewheel which is very good. Often forgotten feature in games.

The tile artwork if very appealing to me. I love the detail of the landscape and the units what I have seen so far. Only the former could look a bit more worn to me.

You made it easy to get into the game. Everywhere mouse over tooltips and broken down statistics. Good job.
I'm only missing a tutorial pop-up for cities. Explaining how they work. City radius, working hexes, correlation between minerals and production. Population management (Ok, that one came later when I got my first new pop.)

Lets continue to play a few more rounds and see if I survivable the xeno hive SE from my city.

Random thoughts:
Figured out you can move the report window and it will remember it location in future. Moved it into the corner so it don't block my view during alien turns. There is one background music song that is plays louder than the others. World 6. I reduced music volume to 10%. Think I will delete the file later.

About Workshop...
A cancel button for the workshop screen would be nice. In case you're just playing around with the options.
Is there no visual change for steel armor versus no armor?
Make it more clear you can change design name by clicking on the name above the preview window.
No way to upgrade units? Let me issue new guns and body armor to my already deployed troops.
...and now the workshop windows is too small to list all my designs. Do it like Alpha Centauri. Make the window rectangular and have the designs listed at a bottom taskbar with unit icon and name below the icon. (I think in time of widescreen display all windows should be rectangular, never square.)

Cities...
Ask me if I want also to upgrade my current unit production when I upgrade the design. For example my initial colonial trooper design got updated with hellfire and steel armor.

Mexallon field discovered. I have to zoom in everytime I see a new tile graphics to admire it up close.

Sciter sighted. Flying critters!!! That surprised me. We need to increase bodybag production.

While forest and special titles look great the grassland hexes look a bit too plain for my taste. increase details. Maybe, how is that called, bump maping or parallax mappin?

It would be nice if explored alien ruins would stay on the map and not get removed. Switched it to an other graphics to indicated it has been already looted. Err, I mean scientifically explored and cataloged.

Gold vein graphics... less black more gold. Always more gold. Moar goooold!

I should have played with the tax rate and morale effects sooner. Lowered tax rate to maximize production.

Wow nice fire effect. No flame tanks :(

Considering you can get 10 minerals from ruins I think colony ship dismantling should give at last 25 minerals.

Lol, Roger Raynor a new chapter at "Unsafe at any speeds" rover adventures.

No flamers for my seekers either. :(

My first AI contact. The "Prime Minister" promptly insults me by call me a Doctor. "We're done here."

Can I form armies/ groups and have them move together? Found out, hold down shift but not permanently.

So far I'm content with the game and have great fun exploring the world and fighting the xenomorphs. Alien Aggression set on high certainly gives me the frontier experience I was looking for. I chucking out units one after an other one to, how say it politely? For my ongoing sterilization efforts. Though as the scientist faction I miss some way to capture and vivisection specimen. "...and now let study how they react to pain. Bring me the burner nurse." :shock:
Of course I have to play much more to form a real opinion, but so far as customer I would think I did a good buy. Early game is quite enjoyable for me.

Resuming my game..
When launching the game in windowed mode the window should automatically centered. Actually I did some testing. If I move the window it remembers the last window position for the next run, but on the third it get reset again and opens in a corner.

I already asked for a borderless window option but if you go it, do a fullscreen borderless option too please.

It is possible for the game to remember my tutorial state. Either show each pop-up only once, unless the tutorial is reset. Or add an option to turn off a specific tip "Don't show again" button. Sometimes it may be good to have certain tutorial tips brought up again as reminder.

Shadows...
Is there a higher shadow quality planed for the future? I actually missed the shadows at first as I started in a heavily forested area, but when I ventured out into the great plain I saw them clearly. The shadow cast by my colonial troopers is already good, but I would love a highly detailed shadow for the Xenomorph drones. A shadow where the hair like cilia of the venus trap part are clearly cast on the ground. This would look really scary.

Wait a moment. I did not notice this before, as I said before because of the heavily forested starting area but now in the plains I see it. There are clouds casting shadows to the ground and altering the brightness of the titles as the sunlight shine through them. Awesome. :o
I just discovered my first Gaia forest and because of the effect above I first thought the forest itself was luminescent. Which brings up an idea. Luminescent vegetation!!!

Sound...
The ambient sounds are good. The water waves at the coast. Birds chirping and humming in forest. The wind blowing over the plains. Erie howling over ruins. Some nasty goo'ish sound over the Xeno hives. The volume of the goo sound could be a bit louder by the way. Maybe you can even add some clatter or rattling noise as if a drone in the distant is smashing it trap lobes together. I'm already shivering at the thought of it.

Hotkeys...
Pressing F1 should bring up Help. Actually assign F-keys to all the various windows.
My wish list.
F1 = Help
F2 = Research
F3 = Economy /Cities
F4 = Military
F5 = Workshop
F6 = Diplomacy
F7 = Events

CTRL+# for my doom stacks

Economy...
I like how you chose to have a global economy and industry instead everything wrapped-up into single bases. Sure in Alpha Centrauri you could build supply crawlers to establish resource convoys to other cites. But this was cumbersome and limited at the same time.
Since in Alpha Centauri each base was like an independent unit the was no real global interrelations. Eventually you could completely ignore terrain once you researched certain technolgies. It only mattered in the beginning. You just planed forests or fungus everywhere and had the same yield no mater what the original terrain was.

Your model is especially interesting if a player takes his time to study the map and plan ahead how to place and diversify future cites to maximize all production empire wide.
Player that master this system will be way ahead of others. For this purposes it would be nice to have a hotkey toggle to show tile yields without having a former or colonizer selected.

Operations...
So embarrassing. I build a "Field Training" for my doom stack and could not figure out how to use it. Eventually found out you just right click. Somehow I excepted some kind of feedback. May I suggest when you click on an operation the cursor changes depending on the operation you're trying to use? Then left click to use it and right click to abort.

I like the alien look of the savanna vegetation.

The AI dared to declare war one me. Bad move. Fighting the Xenomorphs left me with a highly experienced army. I only killed one unit so far but I'm ready to call "Mission Accomplished".

When renaming units in the workshop let me use my cursor keys to reposition the typing cursor. Currently it scrolls the map. The same applies when renaming cities.

Do Xenomorphs attack undefended cities or is it just because I'm playing at easy? I used my settler escort to explore at bit and lost it. Now the a drone is just walking up and down outside my city waiting to be murdered in the future obviously. Oh and murdered it will. :twisted:

Can't wait for the incoming upgrade option (@Soheil Thanks again for the heads up!). My Disciples of Fire are yearning for the assault kit.

I hope we get to see unit model recoloring based on armor used.

How lovely to name a weapon "Serenity Cannon". Are we not all striving to find serenity? "Sure, don't move."

Damn I want the SWS Headhunter for my seekers. Perfect skirmisher and certainly unbalanced too. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

I need a medics for my troopers.

I'd prefer if it follows the Civ4/5 convention, meaning:

F1 = Help
F2 = Economy /Cities
F3 (Civ5) or F5 (Civ4) = Military
F4 = Diplomacy
F6 = Research

Jup also had a case in which they invaded the city and killed citizens - but did not destroy conquer the city. Seems you pay a price for low garrisons in pandorra but not the ultimate - i guess the xenos are not looting with intend..

Because of the recent patch I have to start a new game. (crash on load)
Here some of my last thoughts on the previous match. (Version 0.10.0)

Units graphics...
I would love to have a visual indication which device a unit is using.
For example for the Defender Kit: A fading in and out blue transparent shield which surrounds the unit, like a bubble. Occasionally a bright blue electric lighting wave move across the shield.
For the assault kit how about a red laser rangefinder?
Of course I have no clue if your engine can actually support that kind of effects.

Does the engine support light sources on unit models? Maybe you could place some positional lights (aircraft wings, tank rear lights, Mech spotlight, boat bow searchlight) or for the pulse laser a glowing coil.

After all the terraforming this planet now look like a dump. Screw humanity. I want switch sides and play Xenomorphs. Defend Pandora from the human locusts! (Add-on idea)
Leviathan sighted. I definitely want to play the Xenomorphs now.

AI...
Wow, the AI just played me and "stole" one of my cities. I was swapping the defender with a modernized version and forgot the road over the hill is stil not finished. This single turn without a defender was enough for a boat to sneak in. To add insult to the injury the population is not happy to be liberated. I still received a take over penalty. :(
Obviously a conspiracy is going on here. That calls for the creation of a secret police to ensure loyalty. I need the kind of efficient secret police that expect deception everywhere and so they always find it. :twisted:

My neighboring AI is about to be wiped out the next few turns by me and yet he declares war against two other AI's. That I call confidence. Let me guess V-weapons? Guess not. Eliminated.

Can I destroy cities? As far I see additional cities never can hurt you. At least I have not notice any negative efficiency coefficient like in AC. However just in case I decide to be a real Richard and justify the hate towards me.

Miscellaneous...
Does the AI give the Reactor Array building low priority?

Pollution warning required.

How about an inland lake or sweet water tile that give 1 extra food?

New Patch Version 0.10.1 (March 14, 2013)

Some terrific changes came with the patch. Thanks for all of them. My favorites.

* Enabled intro cinematic. - That is a good looking Intro. Now I know there the game takes actually place. Nashira. Is that based on Gamma Capricorni? I find the play of meaning funny. Pandora, disambiguated for mischief and Nashira according to wiki "the lucky one" or "bearer of good news".

F-Hotkeys, Yield overlay and "Ctrl+LMB on unit list Select all own units in list".

"* Borders now grow with each colonist starting at 8." I was just to write something about that.

I'm excited to test the new pollution and moral system.

* Renamed Scholars of Eden to Togra University.

* Fixed being able to grow a forest on a road. - My exploit :)

Damn, just started a new game and the game crashed. I had such an epic starting location with 3 mountains and a Gaia forest next to me. Clicked the build city button, crash! No autosave created yet. This is not fair. :(
May I recommend beside fixing the crash itself, to create an autosave immediately a new game starts.

Crash it repeatable. It always crash when trying to build my first city. Not matter if button or hokey is used or which faction (tried only 3 of them).

Going to uninstall, delete all leftover files, redownload installer and reinstall.

Re: Dragoon's rolling thread

Post by Dragoon. »

Guess there was a rollback by now. Because the game only updated to version 0.10.0 and not to 0.10.1.
Since I already deleted my old saves I'm will wait until the fixed patch goes online before starting a new game. (Though I could probably restore mys saves via "Previous Versions").
If you guys could please drop a note in the forums when the patch goes online. Saves me running the game occasionally only to see if the patch is out.

We'll make a new thread, as always, not to worry. We've just found a bug at the last minute that needs fixing, apologies. Hopefully tomorrow.
