if you have a bg of pike that has a detachment of shot would you position them infront of the pike as a skirmish line or in regular order too the sides??

The point of the detached shot rules is to allow the shot to operate completely separately from the pikes, as they sometimes did historically.

The normal formation rules already take into account (in a top down way) the effects of the shot part of a pike and shot battle group operating partly on the flanks and partly in front of the pikes. This is not depicted in detail on the table because of the small number of figures used to depict each BG. It is hard to visually represent the details of complex formations with 20 figures.

If you were using 6mm figures on 15mm bases, thus allowing multiple ranks of figures on each base, you could put musketeers in the front rank of the front rank pike base to represent this.
