Kradschützen in '41

Post by KeldorKatarn »

I find it quite unfortunate that the Kradschützen only become available in '41. I tried to follow Panzer Division setups in my core quite closely and two things bothered me the most:
the 15cm artillery becomes available very late, which is unhistorical from what I know, since the German artillery regiments did have 10,5 and 15cm artillery right from the start. Two light batteries, one heavy.
But even more the Kradschützen. I can live with them being infantry, even though most of them were eventually integrated into recon forces and even when they existed on their own they were used like recon mostly. But why only in '41? The invasion of russia and the bad terrain there was exactly what caused their demise. So by that time they are a lot less historical and useful.
I think it would be ideal to have them early on and then let the player upgrade them into regular recons later on, since that is what happened in reality it seems... right now you can get them and will be stuck with them, when they are no longer useful or historical and you don't want any extra normal infantry...

I agree with most of this.

They should probably be in the recon group. When I started the DLCs over again from 39 I used a cheat code to get myself two of them a couple years early. I could not think of a good reason not to. They were very useful in 39 and 40. As soon as 41 came around (when they are officially available in the game) they were significantly less useful.

I second this as I also was disappointed by their late years release in the game (DLC).

You can always go in using the equipment editor found in Pz Corps Scenario Design area and edit when Krad Infantry is available and if you want them to be a recon unit or both.

We all know we can mod it, that's not the point. I could rewrite this entire game if I took the time and change everything I don't like. That's not the point either. We greatly enjoy this game as is and I just made a comment about possible improvements :) After all Kradschützen were introduced for a campaign that started late in the war (Africa) so they weren't originally meant for the DLCs. And since the devs are discussing possible changes to the older DLCs based on new equipment and features I thought this might be worth discussing.

Actually, I did mod it. The Kradschützen in my Unit Revisions mod starts out available in 1940, has reconmove, and gets an automatic upgrade to a 43 variant in 1943. I actually adjusted the unit in part based on posts I read here. So developer support aside, there is an option for an improved Kradschützen.

What values did you use for the 43 variant? Is it closer to 43 infantry I think that is the way to go rather than infantry but the current unit values make it to weak in 1943. When I initially saw this post I agreed it should be available sooner. I modded the availability date to 39 but didn't think of recon until I remember that old Pz Gen II had an equipment mod that added it.

I constructed tables to show combat properties in my mod. Almost all units, including the Soviets and Allies, are included in such tables. Below is the one for 43 German infantry.

More Firepower only, change from MG34 to MG42.

Thanks I have already edited the equipment file but the cost $$ look a lot higher than the stock equipment file so I lowered them down to be a +60$ for the 43 year units. But it is a great job to gather the data and present it in a tabular form to modify the equipment file.

There are numerous reasons in my mod why the cost is so high; for one, regular transports are much more expensive (basic trucks 100 prestige, half-tracks 200-300 prestige), so anything with motorization needs a higher cost. Furthermore, this unit has 3 spotting, reconmove, and 6 SA, which when using my rules gain one extra attack per experience level. So this unit needs to be quite expensive to prevent it from becoming the default choice. If it cost only, say 250 prestige, there would never be any reason to buy the basic Wehrmacht infantry.

You would almost be better rather than making a Krad 43 unit to give similar functionality to the SdKfz250 which would be more typical of it's use than as an infantry carrier.
