Recruitment drive

Post by johngl »

I'm introducing my son Ralph to FoGR and we had our second game yesterday. This time we used 25mm figures, at 700 points, and the spectacle was great. Ralph commanded the New Model Army against my Later Royalists; noting that the Royalists would have at least four Cavalier units, he maximised the terrain leaving very little space for Rupert's heroes to operate.

It was a great game. Each army aimed to crush the other's left flank. On my left the NMA firelocks and dragoons drove back a dragoon unit, then combined with the Ironsides to defeat a Royalist foot regiment and supporting cavaliers. The Ironsides then looted the Royalist camp (no doubt finding lots of embarrassing documents such as promises of Catholic emancipation). On the other flank, cavaliers supported by commanded shot and dragoons defeated a shot-only regiment and dragoons on broken ground, sacked the Roundhead camp, overran their artillery and started rolling up the NMA centre. Both armies were teetering but the NMA broke first for a glorious Royalist victory.

The game had everything - cavaliers who refused to stop pursuing, an invincible Royalist dragoon regiment which passed every death roll and cohesion test with ease, non-stop action... Ralph will definitely be back for more.

Sounds great John. What figures did you use?

Cheers

The New Model Army are all Warlord plastics, painted during the past year or so. The Royalists are a mixed bunch; mostly old Minifigs with a few Hinchcliffe and Foundry, plus some recently-added Warlord figures. The Minifigs foot don't look too ridiculous beside the much larger new figures, which are more like 35mm than their nominal 28mm, but the horse appear really weedy so I'm replacing them with Warlord plastics.

I really must get into the habit of taking pictures of these games.
