28mm Dragoons

I am planning on doing a Later 30YW German army in 28mm.

So far I have been looking at mostly Warlord Games plastics, with Cuirassiers from Foundry (as the Warlord ones have multipart metal riders and, after a horrible experience with some Mirliton knights, I don't trust them not to disintegrate).

Neither Warlord not Foundry seem to do dismounted dragoons with horses and horse-holders.

Any suggestions?

I've toyed with doing a 28mm army using the plastics. My plan is to adapt some unarmoured pikemen as horse holders and use something like the Firelock Storming Party as the dismounted dragoons. If you buy the Battalion Starter box, which is a good deal, you should be able to get enough figures for 1 or 2 units.

I found some from Dixon Miniatures, which are available as single figures as well. They are a little shorter than the Warlord figures, but as they are on separate bases that's not really noticeable

Horse holders should be mounted figures: See Wagner's 30YW book.

In which case they would presumably be far enough back to be out of enemy fire, so they probably shouldn't be on the base at all!

True. I blame DBR for the 7th Cavalry look ... well maybe I should take some of it: I did the rough sketches for Ryszart to give the artist the basic layout of the plates in the Osprey, Army of Gustavus Adolphus (that extended chain of communication led to a Lapp sledge having it's tracks in the snow run ahead of it ). One of them was what I intended to be Dragoons surprised and beating an hasty retreat while operating as pickets. There the horseholder is mounted and I think that look works well. In battle the horse holder would be well to the rear with up to ten horses ( IIRC from Wagner's book) with reins looped over.

One way of indicating Dragoon units would be to give them a mounted guidon bearer. You could use these http://www.totalwargamer.co.uk/blog/?p=1059 with a standard bearer or some such from the Warlord Cavalry boxes (though I'm not sure dragoon guidons were carried on lances. IIRC they were mounted on half-pike-like staves).

I probably will still use (dismounted) horseholders as it looks less silly than having a man nonchalantly sitting on his horse while the musket balls whizz past his ears. Leaving the horseholder off the base entirely makes them harder for the opponent to identify as dragoons, which (while it might be more realistic) would be unsporting.

To each his own . The only scenarios that make sense of a horse or horses on the Dragoon base, is if the dragoons are skirmishing and the horses are needed near (dismounted horseholders are, so I've read, much less able to control the horses) or if an officer, drummer or musician has remained mounted. Being on an horse with bullets whistling around one's ears was considered a test of character in those days
