Taking Malta

Post by GogTheMild »

Is there a thread, or a detailed AAR, on taking Malta? All I can find is Plaid vs Morris №3, which doesn't give much detail but which makes it look easy. But when I hotseat it, it seems almost impossible.

Or can anyone make any suggestions. (Even if they are: "Don't do it".)

there is somewhere! - the two key things to do it 'quickly' are to reduce the supply to zero (STR and TAC or just TAC's, but it will take longer) so the GAR can't repair and to para onto the airfield

Malta should be difficult to capture. As the Allied Player I try to place a Leader that has a value of 5 with a Defense of 1 added.

To make it difficult. And if you can, try to sneak in a Mech and swap the GAR. :) Then you opponent will say fuhgettaboutit......

At first , you have to eliminate the Malta's FTR first sothat you may drop the para ,Then plus 3BB & 2Tac , you will get it within 4 turns (6 turn if the Gar with a defence leader ) :)

What's the main advantage of taking Malta? I know its importance IRL, but I'm not sure about its in-game importance. It increases the Axis NA supply, but most players don't bother with attacking Egypt in a standard game (i.e. no 1942 Barbarossa) and you don't need that many heavy units to defend Libya for a while (in many cases it would actually be a waste). Instead of sending units to Libya and risking losing them for no real gain, Italy can be turned into a fortress.

Even in case of Fortress Europe strategy the Axis player will usually be fully focused on getting Spain in the Axis and will need most of their naval and air assets for that... and since their will need to take Tunis and other ports in NA, the supply allowance will be higher than normal, anyway. If their decides to turn to Egypt after Spain joins the Axis, the chance is that their won't need any additional NA supply. In theory the Allied player could send massive forces to Egypt, but at that point in the game their needs to be wary of a potential Sea Lion, so this rarely happens.

I guess it would make an Allied invasion of Sicily harder...but they still can get Tunisia as a great airbase. Still, it helps the Axis. I would say that unless you have a major campaign in Egypt/Iraq planned, Malta is only worth doing if you don't have to spend a lot of oil or PPs, and if it doesn't hinder other operations. Otherwise, the effort is not worth the payoff.

Worked a treat. Thanks for the advice. Whether it was worth it we shall have to see.
