do they still counter charge???

Post by deadtorius »

Not sure if this has been brought up before but in our game today I charged a French cavalry unit with an Austrian cavalry unit that had to pass in front of 2 infantry units. The Austrians took massive hits from the infantry fire and went to wavering.

Then came the question, do the French still counter charge even though the charge was stopped from shooting, and where exactly do the Austrian cavalry stop their move??

We made the french do their counter charge and stopped the Austrians 2 MU away since we couldn't find anything in the rules about it.

Does not each unit that the assaulting unit passes within close range shoot? The Austrian horse drove right along the fronts of two infantry units.

But with how many dice ...do they count as "support" or do they fire with full dice ...

based on a past post on the forums back in the summer Terry had said anyone you pass within 2 MU of can shoot you as you pass by, so I took full dice, unfortunately for me only one of those two units was conscript that hit me once, the line unit got 3 hits

The Charging cavalry unit take fire from all infantry capable of firing at close range (with full dice) up to the position at which the (potentially) counter-charging enemy would hit them.
All dice would be hitting on a 5+ unless the assaulting cavalry unit begins its charge ifrom a in a position that allows the firers a flank or rear POA - in which case those dice will hit on a 4+.
If the hits don't stop the charge, the counter-charge occurs as normal - otherwise there is no counter-charge since the assault is stopped before the contact point is reached.

Hi Terry
Is this in a forthcoming errata?

At the moment, countercharge moves go before charge moves so the above seem to make sense. The countercharging unit will have already moved when defensive fire takes place.

It's not in the forthcoming errata - which was sent in a couple of weeks ago and should be up shortly.

The above makes most sense, but as you say, the action sequence does not agree.
At the moment the following would happen:
1) The charge is declared
2) The counter-charge is moved
3) The chargers take fire at 2MU away from the counter-chargers (or at the starting position if already close).
4) The charge, if stopped by fire, retires the appropriate distance.

There's a certain logic to this - in that the target unit would start moving forwards ready to meet the charge, but the chargers then change their minds and call off the charge having taken fire on the way. I'm happy to leave it as it is for the moment and leave it for further consideration.
