Carthaginian basing advice needed

Post by Shem »

Hello everybody!
Since I'm halfway done re-basing my germans for FoG (Whoohoo!) I'm now trying to get as much Carthaginians done until february.
An older thread with a sample army list posted by Mr.Scott has een a great help, yet I have some quations that hve not been answered on the forum I believe.

1. Are there african auxilia in FoG? (3figs, 20mm) The typical africans with no armour, large shields and hand-weapons who assisted the spearmen. Havent seen them in basing guides or army lists yet, though every miniature manufacturer makes them.

2. Is there heavy african cavaly in FoG? Only seen numidian and celtic allies so far, but I need to know if I have to rebase my armoured african carhaginian cavalrists, or if they arent used at all.

3. How big are elephant and artillery BGs? 2? And are they allowed to be bigger/smaller?

4. Generals in general (!), is there a recommended basing size for them and do you distinguish between generals on foot or mounted? Or are they rather "markers"? People alwas say it doesnt matter much how big they are, but since they can be destroyed by being touched by enemies, gues some sort of firm rule should be released. Else, some people have gigantic generals with retinue, while others are hiding on an 1x1cm base...

Would be great if anybody could help!

No African "auxilia". Are you, perhaps, thinking of the Liby-Phonecian spearmen? If so they are 4 to a base, 15mm deep. The only other Africans are skirmishing javelinmen at 2 to a base.

There are a few Liby-Phonecian cavalry which, again, I assume is what you mean here.

Both are fixed at 2 bases.

Generals are, in effect, markers and are not usualoly destroyed by being touched by enemy. Base size can be anything up to 40mm x 40mm for 15mm figures IIRC.

There are in fact large numbers of Poeni emergency levies allowed by the list. These are MF on 20mm deep bases, but are Poor and of doubtful value. They are in the list for historical accuracy so that certain historical OOB can be reproduced. You won't want them in you normal army unless you are a masochist.

Ooops, forgot the 3rd Punic War - mind you it would be a "bold" choice to field it

Thanks for the replies!
I'm using 20mm plastc figures and the Sets from HäT and Zvezda each include african infantry which are dressed in the phoenician style but have equipment rather like the iberian allies. Seen the figures in 15mm/28mm too. So they are masochist-troops? Then 1 BG might be enough (just for blaming them when loosing...)

The cavalry I meant surely are liby-phoenicians, for they are dresed and armoured much like the typical spearmen/veterans. If they are that uncommon, I will just prepare one 4-base BG.
