What to do if it really is "a bridge too far"...

Some players may find that what sounded easy eyeballing the Strat Map is actually quite challenging, perhaps because of the units in their OOB, perhaps because of the direction of approach...

Scout around to see if you can find alternative routes or weaknesses, on the battle map, but if you really feel you can't crack a map, you can always sit back and aim to keep one flag... BGs that hold at least one VP flag at the end of the game, and have an empty neighbouring sector that is friendly flagged, can withdraw without being dissolved... And if all else fails, try to negotiate a ceasefire...

As I was realising the unit setups and the directions of approach, Buron, Bayeux and Ouistreham could be really, really interesting games... Caen is going to be a meat grinder!!

GottaLove88s wrote:So, here's what we're looking at for June 8th...

4x CONFIRMED BATTLES - June 8th AM

Battle maps will approximate what you see on the Strat Map, but I've provided short descriptions below to help you with force selection...

OUISTREHAM - 151/50 (inf) [NTMRS] attacks fortified defence (AFD) v 858/346 (inf) [AFMRPS] - arrives from W
Enormous fortified beach with many defences positioned towards the sea. Some woods, estuary and marshes. A small town at the eastern edge

CAEN - 125/21Pz (mech) [APS] attacks fortified defence (AFD) v 6al/6 (para) [ATMRS] - arrives from S
Regional capital city with a castle fortress controlling river crossings. A busy port, cathedral, warehouses and university districts. Urban extreme.

BAYEUX - 9/3 (mech) [AMRS] attacks fortified defence (AFD) v II/744/711 (VG inf) [PS] - arrives from N
Historic town, dominated by river, cathedral and a fortified town hall. Fields to the south and west.

BURON - 8/3cdn (mech) [S] attacks fortified defence (AFD) v II/736/716 (VG inf) [MPS] - arrives from NW
Mostly fields and hedgerow, some small woods, several roads through the centre. Opposing forces are divided by a river towards the west.

1x POSSIBLE BATTLE - June 8th PM (if defender wins June 8th AM)

BAYEUX 231/50 (mech) [S] attacks fortified defence (AFD) v II/744/711 (VG inf) [PS] - arrives from NE
Historic town, dominated by river, cathedral and fortified town hall

Bonuses in square brackets [A=Arty, N=Naval Arty, T=Typhoon, F=Fw190G-2, M=Medic, R=Rally, P=Promote, S=Resupply]

Hadn't expected Buron, so I need to knock that map up and am busy with work/family this weekend. Hope to get you all started midweek... Urban practice recommended for Caen and Bayeux... Field/hedgerow assaults recommended for Allies in Buron and Ouistreham; Sneaky ambush practice recommended for Germans in same...

Remember, in GJS'44, the map winner takes the most POINTS... not necessarily the most flags.
Take care to observe where the points are, before you move.
Each map has five flags... 2x 5pts, 2x 3pts, 1x 1pt...

Guys,

Apparently some of you guessed wrong on deployments for June 7th, so a few hints to help you out for June 8th...

For every GJS'44 battle, your deployment zones are carefully designed to accurately represent realistic arrival points of attackers, and most likely defence locations for incumbents.

So if you're attacking from a side, you will be able to deploy to much of that side plus/minus any restrictions due to obstacles such as forests, marshes, rivers, etc... If you're attacking diagonally, expect to arrive in the corner... Nothing is set in stone on the exact deployment pattern except that it will approximately replicate directions of approach from the Strat Map...
GJS'44 Rules & Regs wrote:7.42 Attack vs Fortified Defence (AFD) - where an attacking BG moves into the sector of a defender that has not moved, the attacker can select max.20 units, the defender can select max.25 units. Attacker approximately deploys into the first 5 rows; defender approximately deploys into back 30 rows. Attacker begins with 1 HQ flag. Defender starts with all 4 other flags (5 VP flags on the map). Attacks against Fortified Defenders will not be easy. It will probably take more than one turn, and considerable losses, to dislodge them... Remember that GJS'44 is a 25-turn campaign, so suck it up and earn your victory!

With that in mind, I'm up for some games...
so I've setup four non-password battles which I expect to be tough...

Caen as Germans - taken by Joncorcuera
Bayeux as Germans - taken by JC
Buron as Allies
Ouistreham as Allies - taken by Al

Take pity on a poor GM... Pick a map that you're not playing for GJS'44... and come n play me!!

OUCHstreham, lol!!

Ok, confession time... After rapidly discovering an enemy scout and momentarily crippling it to 6 morale but only 3/4 men, am receiving a brutal pasting on Ouistreham...

Al's airstrike took out an M16AA and the Sherman it was next to, 2nd turn... and his Arty Barrage took out the other M16AA, a Bren carrier and a scout on the 3rd turn... 15 brave Brits face 25 staunch Germans... All I can say is Al knows how to use his Arty, wow n ouch for shock n awe... My dead AA crews really need to read their instruction manuals better...

Hope you're all having better luck than me in your campaign games? For sure, Al must be kicking some!! Nicely done, mister...

Any AARs up yet?

When I saw his AA units move up along the trees...I was thinking...well there goes my air strike! When it came in and I saw 2 'Target Destroyed' pop-up...I nearly fell out of my chair!

It's still early and I know Jon has something up his sleeve to strike back...
