Themed or open?
Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
feel free to suggest other options then- if i have read your reply correctly.. always here to help the punters stay happy
Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
You did read my reply correctly (sorry).
I know a lot of the regular tournament players don't mind open and therefore it doesn't seem to be an issue but I feel the proliferation of open tournaments does stop newcomers entering them in the first place. I imagine they are attracted, like me, to the hobby as a whole because of its historical nature. Otherwise they would take up chess or something. I have absolutely no interest in fighting, say, Vikings against Assyrians. It wastes the whole concept of painting up historically accurate little men and fighting battles with them across realistic looking scenery.
I like the concept of the themed tournaments suggested in the list books.
Then you have at least a chance of your imagination being fired by reliving history.

Have you any intention of going?

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!

Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
well... let me know your preference and if you intend to come along and at this point i cant see much reason why i cant make it themed..but it has to be accessible to others too- and quite a few competitions are themed these days.
Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
I'm in agreement with Eques. Open is a big turn off IMO. And therefore I'm quite happy to express the opinion that in general I would like to influence organisers to go for some sort of theme. Book thesme are fine, but something a bit more inaginative and varies from time to time is good too.
However, it is also true that I won't be competing in this particualr competition, and worse still when I do compete in competitions it is with a different ruleset entirely. So you can if you choose justify ignoring my opinion on that basis
And the argument that there are plenty of themed tournaments so open is a nice change has merit too, even though I personally don't agree.

Hi guys
I think in fairness people should commit to attending the tournament then a poll of the attendees can be made on themed or not.
Those attendees if desired can then choose a theme that gives them all a chance to bring an army they possess or can beg, borrow or steal.
I know if the tournament was now listed as Blood and Gold armies only I would be immediately put off as I don't have access to those armies.

Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
So nobody can actually *commit* to going until it is known whether it is open, or if it is not, exactly what the theme will be
That's fair enough for the let's say more exotic books/themes. But if it is an argument deployed to ensure most competions are open, in a world in which (I suspect) most regular competition attendees actually do have a reasonable range of armies at their disposal, then I don't like it.
And whilst I don't have a problem with organisers running a democracy in deciding what the format would be, I would like to think that they are also allowed to choose for themselves. If they choose something that isn't going to have enough interest, it's their fault.

It is not an argument to ensure most competitions are open.
It is to try and ensure that those people that want to play at the tournament get their say rather than those people who have no intention of playing at the tournament.

In general I am not sure posting comments about a proposed competition is helpful if you have no intention of attending....
Have a look through the tournament calendar and am sure you will find a large proportion of competitions are themed. If people are prepared to travel across the uk then there are plenty of options. If you are only prepared to travel within an hour or so of home then things will be more limited.
If people who may attend have a view on a theme then that's different and i always try to take into account what the punters want- hence why we do 'average joe' at bayfog which is something different and was enjoyed by all who attended last year. So we are doing it again this year with a slightly earlier date.
But why post on a thread where you have no intention of attending and dont even play the ruleset in comps... very strange and unhelpful really; but i suppose all comments welcome...

I didn't get patronised when I posted in your average joe thread, I wonder why?
I'll leave you to it then. But might I humbly suggest that if only a certain subset of people are expected to have, or allowed to post opinions, you might like to make that clear up front?

well just pointing out the obvious- no offence meant- altho you rather rule yourself out of the discussion... as you say

very helpful Dave !! more like blood and sand.....
Re: Wartorn Scarborough 29 June 650pt competiton
Possibly, if it was themed and suitable for one of my armies.philqw78 wrote:Have you any intention of going?
But as someone who might be interested in getting in to tournaments I am finding a number of barriers including:
*The large number of open tournaments.
*The lack of a simple list of UK tournaments giving their basic details like what KevinJ posted for FogR.
*The total lack of user-friendliness of the websites of all the big conventions. Most of them either don't mention their own tournaments at all or just mention them in passing without any information about them or how to enter!
You'd think it would be a simple matter in this day and age to Google "Field of Glory Tournaments UK 2013" but apparently not
