Roughly what do I need for a 600p Later Hoplite Greek army?

Post by fredrik »

Hi all,

I'm primarily a DBA/BBDBA player looking to take the plunge into the "big league" with FoG by fleshing out my existing LHG army to FoG size. As I understand things the greek army lists will be released in the "Immortal Fire" supplement later in 2008, but could anyone be so kind as to give me a rough ballpark figure on how many hoplite, peltast and psiloi elements would be required for a standard 600p army so I can start preparing the army? I've heard around 70 bases would be required for the standard game so would say 30 bases of hoplites, 30 of "lights" and 10 of support (Art, Cv, Lh etc) sound about right for a later army?

Cheers,
-Fredrik

First point 650 points seems to be a current norm for 25/8mm games and 800 for 15mm - on 6x4 tables anyway - so your 600 points may be a bit low.

Second I think you'd be more likely to be looking at 40 bases of hoplites, 8-12 of mounted and say about 20 of "lights" of which say 8 may be some sort of medium foot such as Thracians.

Many thanks for the reply - if I understand you correctly for 800 points I'd be looking at something in the order of 50+ bases of hoplites, 10-16 of mounted and 25-30 bases of lights then?

Jeez... I'd better get painting! ;-)

Cheers,

Probably the lower end of the lights and cavalry - but lots of hoplites, but as its a Greek army ...

I'd recommend starting on hoplites as you'll definitely need them and then do the supporting troops when more information on the list is available.

The nice thing about hoplites is that you can use them in substantial numbers in lots of other armies, including

Lydian
Achaemenid Persian (early and late)
Late Dynastic Egyptian
Syracusan
Carthaginian
Kyrenean Greek
Alexandrian Macedonian

and several others as allies.

The hoplites are organised as units of 6 or 8 bases each, as are the light infantry and peltasts and thracians. If you paint each unit distinctly then you might want to organise then in units of 8 to be on the safe side. However, it may mean that if you end up preferring the smaller unit sizes you then have spare bases kicking around.

OTOH if you have a whole bunch of Athenian / mercenary /generic types it doesn't really matter.

Experiance says that Almost 2/3 to 3/4 of your force will be Hoplites, unless you are Asiatic or Phokian.

Many thanks everyone for your replies. I had the opportunity to have a look at the beta armylists yesterday which to my delight had an entry for the greeks so I've decided to preorder the rules to have an opportunity to participate in the beta program and use that list as a basis for building up the army.

Again, many thanks for your help!

Greetings

As Greeks are one of my main interests I went through my unpainted 15mm Greek figures and discovered that I had a few more than I thought albeit from a variety of manufacturers (it's a pretty eclectic mix - Xyston, Chariot, Gladiator, old Tumbling Dice).

It looks like a few categories will have to mix manufacturers or have a few figures added to reach 6 base BGs (which I understand from the earlier post is the minimum) but there are already enough figures for a Spartan hoplite BG, three Theban/Boiotian BG, 7 other hoplite BG and a mercenary hoplite BG as well as a peltast BG, 5 javelin/stone armed LF BGs, an archer BG and 2 light cavalry BGs (varying between 6 and 8 bases in each case).

I am intending to paint up hoplites in BGs over the next few weeks (and months in my case). For some reason I find painting 'units' easier than individual bases. If I'm really lucky I'll have a basic force by around the time the relevant supplement comes out (Immortal Fire?) in April to start customising.

I think this means I'm going to pre-order the rules ...

Regards

Edward
