Below are photos of a battle between a British Celtic army, commanded by Richard Woolford, vs a Macedonian army, commanded by Craig Bryon. It was fought at Wellington Warlord's (in Wellintton New Zealand), along with three other battles of FoG this Saturday.
Deployment and Initial Movement
The battlelines for warbands and pike smashed into one another. This was the beginning of a back and forth struggle, in which battle groups would be disrupted, then bolstered back up and disrupted again.
While this was occurring to the Macedonian Companions charged into a battle group of chariots on the other flank.
The Campanions routed the chariots.
Back with infantry, the warband routed the archers. However, a battle group of Macedonian Elephants and a battle group infantry pushed the British light horse back on the other flank.
One the warband swung round to hit the pike in the rear. The British light horse surrounded the Elephants peppering them with Javelins from all directions. Amazingly the battle group of elephants passed all their cohesion tests. The Campanions continued to pursue the routed British light horse.
The Marcedonian light foot valiantly stood and received the charge from the warband, protecting the rear of the pikes.
Then breakthrough for the pikes. They broke the battle group of elite warband in the centre of British army's battle line. However, sadly that was the end of the battle. We therefore can only speculate on what might of been.
In my opinion massed infantry battles are handled much better FoG than they are in DBM. Both of the massed infantry battles I have seen, one in a battle where an Early Crusader army fought my Late Medieval German army and in this battle, have been tense close fought affairs with future swinging both ways. They were also very enjoyed contests for both sides and reflected the 'flavour' of the types of the troops involved.
