Deployment of elephants

As elephants are not mounted troops they can not be deployed within 12MUs of a side table edge, which, as far as I know, historically was a standard deployment (at the wings, in front of enemy cavalry); ¿is that an omission of the rules or is there an explanation for the rule?

You are playing the rule correctly. Perhaps it was unintended, but it is the RAW
