Question on flags...

Is it worth taking all five flags on a battle map? Should a loser try to keep at least one flag at the end of a battle?

Normally, the answer is a resounding "YES" because if a loser does not hold any flags, then that BG would be dissolved, suffering all of the 10% extra penalties and being removed from the Strat Map, etc.

However, under certain circumstances, eg. where a loser has no neighbouring friendly sectors, then it would be dissolved anyway because it has nowhere to retreat to.

Hope that helps?
GJS'44 Rules & Regs wrote:7.7 The victor holds the most VP points at the end of the battle, and takes or holds the sector that was fought over.
7.71 If the loser does not hold any flags (or at least two flags for Allies landing on beaches) at the end, the losing BG is dissolved.
7.72 If both sides hold the same number of VP points, the defender is considered the victor.
7.73 If both sides hold the same number of VP points at the end of an ME battle, both sides must withdraw.
7.74 Withdrawing BGs are moved to an empty neighbouring sector already controlled by their side. The direction of withdrawal is determined randomly by dice throw and will be reported by the GM. The chances are weighted as follows: Withdrawal directly opposite the approach of the attacking unit, 6 chances, Withdrawal diagonally away from the approach of the attacking unit, 2x 2 chances; Withdrawal to the side of the approach of the attacking unit, 2x 1 chance. Units are not permitted to withdraw towards the attacking unit, even diagonally.
7.75 If there are no empty neighbouring sectors already controlled by the loser's side, for that BG to withdraw into, or if the loser's forces are annihilated during the battle (ie. zero units remain), then that BG is dissolved.

Thanks Mike.

We're going to drop the number of units and the supply situation from the Strat Map because it's harder to maintain than it looks. The BG locations are correct though, so that's what you really need.

Use the OOB instead of the map, for accurate unit numbers/descriptions for each BG... 69/50 has 9 units...

Sounds good Jon. Hey...is it possible for you to implement the old style chits?? I really like those a lot. Also, when a unit gets taken off the map momentarily... was neat to see them sitting along side the map. Had that boardgame feel more.
Just askin...no biggie...just thought was pretty neat.

Hey Mike,

What do you mean by "old style chits"?

Mac is kindly looking after our Strat Map. I'll ask him if he could add the "off board" units to the sides. I know what you mean. It was quite cool to see them there...

Now it's 28th, get your butt on holiday mister!! :P

Ah! Do you mean Granfali's BG icons which are graphical?
It's doable but it would be extra work for Mac. But I think Granfali used to do our strat maps in Vassal also.
Would you be able to take over looking after the maps, Mike? If we drop it all into Vassal for you?

For the two battles still in play...
Remember to stop after German finishes his move with "3 TURNS REMAINING"...
7.6 The battle is ended once the German player has completed his move showing "3 turns remaining", ie. Games last for 20 turns.
7.61 At the end of the game, the German player should post on this thread which side holds each of the five VP flags, using each flag's label name and showing its VP points value, for example:
June 6th - Juno Beach VPs
German - Road to Tailleville (5 pts)
German - Road to Courseulles (5 pts)
Allied - West Cliff (3 pts)
Neutral - Barracks (3 pts)
Allied - Juno Bunker (1 pt)
German 10 pts v Allied 7 pts
German victory
7.62 The German player must also take a screenshot of the units killed in action (KIAs) screen, showing both sides losses, and post it to this forum thread.
7.63 The Allied player should quote the German's battle report on this thread and add "VP flags and KIAs agreed". If the Allied player does not agree, the German player must post screenshots showing each of the five VP flags, and return the game to the Allied player
.

Summarised Battle Results - June 7th PM

VIMONT - German Victory - German Supply Route Re-opened
Allied (3/6ab) KIAs = 17 = 3x Eng, 4x Para, 3x Scout, 2x PIAT, 1x Mortar, 1x 6pdr, 1x17pdr, 2x Bren = BG dissolved (no adjacent friendly sector to withdraw to)
German (125/21Pz) KIAs = 10 = 3x Inf, 2x Eng, 1x MG42, 1x Scout, 2x 251/1, 1x WirbelAA

HILLMAN - Allied Victory - Germans lose Hillman arty bonus
Allied (7/3cdn) KIAs = 8 = 3x Inf, 1x Eng, 1x Scout, 1x Roo, 1x M5, 1x Cromwell
German (II/726/716) KIAs = 9 = 1x VG, 2x Inf, 2x Eng, 1x Scout, 1x PzShrek, 1x Puma, 1x Marder
II/726/716 retreats to Biéville (random weighted in opposite direction from approach of attacker)

CAEN - Allied Victory - Allies gain +1 movement bonus
Allied (6al/6) KIAs = 13 = 2x Eng, 1x Vickers, 4x Paras, 2x PIAT, 1x 6pdr, 3x Bren
German (Ost/411/716) KIAs = 9 = 1x VG, 2x Inf, 1x Eng, 2x Scout, 1x Truck, 1x 251/1, 1x Puma
Ost/411/716 retreats to Carpiquet (random for each of the possible seven escape route sectors)

GottaLove88s wrote:Battle Previews - June 7th PM

CAEN: 6al/6 (AMR+) ME v Ost/411/716 (P-)
Messy urban environment, dominated by a castle, with a port at its heart. Infantry/scouts/recon essential. To win here you need to train in cities, eg. Ortona.

VIMONT: 125/21Pz AFD v 3/6ab (MR)
VILLERS-BOCAGE: 192/21Pz v 5al/6 (MR)

Both of these are deceptive. At first glance they appear to be open, tank country, and indeed they are, but there are lots of trees and cornfields to hide in, plus scattered stony river fords, dune grass, and rough ground in fields, where anything, from a piat to a 17pdr, can sit and wait in secret. Played well, these can go either way. Played aggressively, you'll get a battering as Allies or as Germans.

HILLMAN BATTERY: 7/3cdn (N) AFD v II/726/716 (AMRP-)
Modelled somewhat close to reality, these 152mm coastal batteries were actually taken from behind in WW2. So Hillman should be a tough ask when it's assaulted from the front, but the Allies benefit from their devastating Naval Artillery and II/726/716 may have been weakened by a prior attack during June 7th AM.

Explanation of bonuses that were allocated:
A=Arty, N=Naval Arty, M=Medic, R=Rally, P=Promote, +=Air-landing so scattered on arrival, -=Out of supply morale penalty

Gents,

Coming to the end of the Villers Bocage battle, are both Commanders nearly ready to submit orders for June 8th?
Don't hesitate to post or PM any questions that you'd like to ask before submitting your orders...
Lots of GJS and '44 vets on both sides now, so brainstorm in private threads too...

Reminder on bonuses to allocate:

Germans have 3 Arty (they lost one in Hillman)
Allies have 3 Arty (they get one for each of Gold, Juno, Sword held, and can win a 4th if they take Ouistreham)
Germans have 2 Fw190G-2 (they haven't lost Carpiquet)
Allies have 2 Typhoon airstrikes (automatic)
Germans have won back resupply for all of their BGs
Allies have won resupply (hold Gold, Juno and Sword) for their BGs too
Germans have promotions for all of their BGs
Allies haven't earned promotions yet
Allies have won +1 movement for all BGs (by taking Caen)
Both sides can allocate 2 Medic and 2 Rally
