This seems a bit weird really. Can anything be done about it at some point?

Stranded in Russia!
Having devised a strategic masterpiece in one of my recent games I boldly seized Helsinki and then entered Petrograd, where I dropped Lenin off and helped him distribute his "April Theses". Sure enough, shortly after there was a revolution and Russia withdrew from the war. So far so good.
But then I couldn't get my troops back to the western front by railway but I had to re-trace my steps through northern Russia and Finland and catch the boat back to Koenigsberg. By the time my troops started returning to Germany my western front had collapsed and I had to surrender.
All because I was not allowed to use the railways even though the Russians were defeated! My units in northern Russia were not too far from Riga either and the eastern front was at Kovno.
This seems a bit weird really. Can anything be done about it at some point?

Re: Stranded in Russia!
I find it is quicker to disband units in the east and rebulld in the west. I will rail a handful of units west, but it takes two turns to make the trip so you average about one unit per turn, even less for the AHs. I know you do not recover all the points when you disband, but, as they say, time is money.

It is what is termed "instant travel" by one of my opponents - completely ahistorical and usually not allowed in the games that I play.majpalmer wrote:I find it is quicker to disband units in the east and rebulld in the west. Re: Stranded in Russia!
Rail movement is ahistorically slow. When the Germans transferred the two corps from Liege to the East in August 1914, those units were in battle at the Masurian Lakes. In game terms, they travelled all the way from Liege to Konigsberg in one turn, and were in action the next. Can't do that in the game, which is why I've been searching for the file that controls rail movement. Unsuccessfully. You can get from Liege to Stettin. Too slow.
Re: Stranded in Russia!
agreed, and naval landings are also too slow. takes 3 turns to get from london to flanders... 4 if you count untill its usable for offense.

Re: Stranded in Russia!
not really ahistorical imo, a railroad capacity of 2 units for germany, that is ahistorical, however i completely understand that any more could and probably would upset the game balance. besides infantry would take 3 turns to train so in turns of roleplaying its also hardly instant. and even garrisons would take about 2 turns to redeploy (1 to train, 1 to move to the front). it really makes no sense to have it take a year to redeploy your army from east to west or west to east.stockwellpete wrote:It is what is termed "instant travel" by one of my opponents - completely ahistorical and usually not allowed in the games that I play.majpalmer wrote:I find it is quicker to disband units in the east and rebulld in the west. Re: Stranded in Russia!
A rail cap of two would be fine IF you could get from West to East or vice versa in one turn.
Re: Stranded in Russia!
ye as germans i barely ever use my railroad capacity and except from moving units from a conquered front to another i never really needed more than 2.
