Oil Consumptuon Rates

Post by rkr1958 »

CEaW 1.04. Through experimentation and reading through the "unit_eng.txt" file, I think I've figured out oil consumption rates. I just wanted to confirm if the following is correct.

Unit Type Move or Attack Move & Attack
----------- --------------- ----------------
Motorized Corps 1 2
Armor 3 6
Fighter 3 n/a
Tactical Bomber 3 n/a
Strategic Bomber 3 n/a
Sub 1 2
Destroyer 1 2
Battleship 1 2
Carrier 3 6
Convoy 1 n/a?
Transport 1 n/a?

Also, fighters that intercept on defense use 3 oil points. Nothing else when attacked uses oil (if this correct?).

If this is correct I see why the axis ran out of oil in the two games that I played. Tanks that move & attack use 6 oil points. Given 8 or so tank corps when invading Russia that alone is 48 oil points per turn if they both move and attack. Also, given 3 tactical bombers with fighter support that's another 18 oil points per turn. It's now apparent to me that moving & attacking in the same turn with armor should only be used when there's a significant tactical advantage to do so, such as completing the encirclement of a significant number of troops.

The first time I played CEAW as the Axis, I built 12 tank corps and wondered why I ran out of oil in 1942. Use RR transport for all tank(and air) units whenever possible. Always think 'is this trip really necessary?' before moving mechanized units of any type and oil can be stretched well into 1943 before it becomes a critical issue.
Nowadays, I don't build more than 6 tank units(the worst oil offender) and things go much better.

Oil consumption depend also on your research level since some advances increase it.
