Internal save compression?

Would it be possible to add some sort of internal save compression to the save files in the next patch? there are quite a lot free algorithms out there that could be used, and even zip manages to lower the file size by 90%. Of course one can compress it manually each time before sending a PBEM save, but internal compression would be a great time saver.
