Commander Sequel - out now!

Post by IainMcNeil »

Hi guys

I'm sure this will be of interest to a lot of you. Commander the Great War has just released.

Image

I've been playing it a lot the last few weeks and it really has become a worthy successor to CEAW. It supports new operating systems, widescreen support, built in PBEM++, great AI, lots of modding opportunities and much more. It really is a great game.

Check it out. I am not a WWI fan and have never played a game in the period as it never interested me but this game really took me by surprise and works so well you really do need to check it out.

Commander – The Great War Now Available!
You are hereby ordered to the Front!

Played it a bit today (first few turns)(uh, repeatedly, trying to get the hang of it) and really enjoyed. Visually nice and surprisingly interesting since I thought ye olde trenches would be a bore.

This looks great and I will surely buy the game, as soon as I'm finished with playing the Panzer Corps DLCs.

As you are posting in this forum, it would be nice if you or another person of slitherine could take a look at the technical problems some of us face with the installer of the new version of the Grand Strategy Mod 2.1 for the good old CEAW, for example

I know this game is not your focus anymore, but nevertheless some help would be appreciated.

Hi Zechi the mod support is being handled by the GS team who are posting on the forums. There were some issues with the GS2.1 installer we've been unable to fix with when applying to old versions of the game applying the mod. There are so many variants from different publishers at retail and digital that it's been almost impossible to get it working for everyone. Right now we have too much going on to look at it again but we get a chance after the Christmas rush we'll see what we can do.

I feel your pain - what I had to do as mentioned before in the forum is start entirely from scratch

1. remove all CEAW files from your machine
2. solicit a new download from slitherine for vanilla game (use your purchase history)
3. load mod as offered from slitherine site

this is the only thing that worked for me after trying endlessly!

@Iain
Thank you for your answer, I understand that your priorities lie elsewhere at the moment. I will try to contact Ronnie and Borger via email. Perhaps they have a solution, but I fear they won't be able to help me in this case. With the beta-version (which I deleted) I never encountered any problems.

I bought the boxed version of the game via amazon germany when it was released by CDV in Germany. So I don't really have any documented purchase history for the game (however I bought Battlefield Academy + DLCs as well as Panzer Corps + Afrika Corps + DLCs directly from Slitherine). I fear I also do not have any documents concerning my order several years back. Can I nevertheless contact slitherine customer service as richardsd suggests for a download of the vanilla game? I could sent in a fotograph of the boxed version to prove that I own the original version of the game.

This is exciting. I'm going to wait until it's out in CD format though.
In spite of the Final Fantasy character it's pronounced sao-win after the Irish pagan god of death. I'm not a pagan but we're on a wargames website so I thought it fitting.

Pretty much all our games are available as boxed versions. This is but the manuals are not in stock - arriving later this week so shipping will begin when they arrive. Its a full colour manual so a nice thing to have.

+1.
I've never really gotten WWI either, and this game is quite frankly far simpler than what I usually play (WitE, Schwerpunkt Games and HPS).
Bought it on advice from a friend, and I have to admit that I'm intrigued.
The various units interact intuitively, and the whole thing is so user-friendly that I've yet to open the manual.
Granted, there's a few things that I think are over-simplified (supply and naval combat to name two), but that's probably more due to my background rather than a flaw in the game itself.
Fast-playing, and several strategies available from the start makes for a high re-playability too.
I've got two words for ya: Math is hard.

Thanks, I hope more CEAW players take the plunge into CTGW and WW1... as it is a lot of fun and requires different strategies.

I will certainly look into CTGW soon in the future. The game engine seems a lot better that CeaW and has a lot of potential.

Maybe we can wish for CEAW2 made some time in the future with this game engine or maybe CPAW (Commander Pacific At War) before CEAW 2. :)

Give me a mail, definitely CEAW2 is on our list, you guys were involved very early on when we started the work on the new engine, but have a serious look at the engine. It is now totally easy to edit and flexible through Lua scripting and the GS team is always welcome for a CEAW2 brainstorming session...

One thing I'd love to see is the commander system from The Great War because in Europe they're a ripoff. For every 1 effectiveness a commander boosts that commander costs 5 production points. If it was 1 production point it would still be a ripoff; a difference of 25 effectiveness is big, sure, but a difference of 1 makes no difference because the game goes by tenths of the unit not hundreds so whether 25,000 men get killed or 25,250 dosen't matter because it's more than 1 step but not enough to be 2 steps. Unmodded Rommel and Guderian cost 110 if I remember correctly. For the same price you could build an entire bomber unit- 250 planes or one man. I know commanders boost the effectiveness of units around them and some even boost attack or defence plus they only get injured not killed but it still seems nowhere near worth it. Added to that, they were there anyway. Why do you have to pay to get them? A number of them were around as far back as WW 1 after all.

Agreed. :) There are several other features in CTGW which would also be improvements in CEAW. One biggie that comes to mind is the surrender of surrounded territory with no cities and no units (much more realistic than the patchwork that you almost always end up with in CEAW games).

On the other hand, I think there are some CEAW features that probably should have been incorporated into CTGW and weren't. Though I can't recall any just now, I remember noticing them while playing :)

Are you implying that commanders are useless in CEAW? You realise that virtually every player is using commanders, right?
