A child, age 5, is trying to play CEAW?

Wow.

I am 31 and it´s quite a challenge...don´t you think it´s a bit too soon for such complicated games? Strategy and wargames requires some kind of...mature abstract thinking, unlikely to be found in a young child.

But i´m glad you are trying to introduce wargaming to you son

Yes, it is very possible.

Can I assume you are running the V1.04 patch?

If so, let me know which side your son wants to play, and I'll make a special version of the 1939 scenario for him. It will literally take me just 15-20 minutes or so with the editor.

The result will be a single file, about 625K in size, that you will need to copy into your scenario folder, which by default is -

C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War\data\scenario

All sound good?

Yes indeed. Unless the boy is extremely precocious I find it difficult to imagine that playing such a game would be particularly enjoyable for him, or that he'd be in a position to learn from mistakes and develop some kind of strategy.

My seven year old is still working on the decision-making within Ludo, for example 'do I use that six to take another player or get another piece out?'

My nine year old is getting to grips with similar issues in Scrabble, eg score maximisation, the risk of opening up the board, the conservation of vowels and esses, etc.

A fantastic game for bright young kids is Othello. They seem to respond to the visual patterns of the game in some way, and quickly learn to steer away from surrendering the sides and corners. I'm sure it's intuitive rather than considered. The elder kid will beat me one time in three now (I'm exactly the greatest player, mind you).

This Christmas I shall be introducing them to backgammon. Hopefully I'll be able to claw back last year's pocket money from them before they suss it out :)

Kids can surprise you.

If you talk baby-talk to them, they learn baby talk. But if you speak to them in normal english, they learn to speak in normal english.

Perhaps something similar applies to games. I have seen some amazingly young kids playing some surprisingly complex games. Not play them as well as an adult, perhaps, but play them well enough to impress.
