Replacement Commanders

Post by viperofmilan »

I know there are procedures spelled out for replacing a lost Corps Commander, and provisions made for promoting a brigadier when a division contains an officer attachment, but what happens when a division commander is lost and there is no leader attachment available in his division (or perhaps in the entire corps)? Surely armies from this era have a clearly defined pecking order within a division that would enable the ranking brigadier to step up to divisional command whether or not he has been represented in the game as an officer attachment.

Any thoughts?

The rules have the divisional replaced even if you don't have a brigade commander present.

See page 67.

It is a little hard to decipher I agree, but the intent is:

A dead DC gets replaced (ie 'comes back') at the end of your next recovery phase - you will miss a recovery attempt with his absence. If you are willing to sacrifice a BC, then you get him back at the start of the recovery phase (so he will be able to recover a unit that turn).

The replacement commander should be placed with a unit of his command.
This will always be the BC's unit if he is sacrificed to bring him back earlier.

I did have an interesting situation in my last game, where the commander left the table, and the only unit of his command left was artillery.
Since he isn't allowed to 'join' an artillery unit we decided that he stayed off the table with the cavalry.
