air defense, AA, fighters and oil

I've got some questions about air defense, AA, fighters and oil.

1)
When I attack a city/resource with my STR/TAC, who is going to shoot at me?

Is it city with it's AA points
or
is it the defending unit with it's AA points? (also when unit is a FGT?)
or
some combination of these?

2)
Possible applications:

-If enemy is after my precious FGTs, does it matter, if I keep them in cities or on open ground?

-If I want to give maximal defense for a city, what should I put there, a FGT or a land unit? Is MEC the best, because TACs have bonus against ARM. Maybe land unit because of oil?

3)
What about the oil?

-Do FGTs use oil when they intercept bombers attacking some other hex?

-Do FGTs use oil when their own airfield is attacked?

If you want to defend a city or a resource, especially oil, put an air unit on it. This restricts air attacks, even STR ones, to one attack per turn, instead of the usual two. It's 'gamey', but it works :D .
We sleep peaceably in our beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.

1. If a stratair attacks, the city or resource's defense value will shoot at you. You will also damage the city/resource with your attack.
If a tacair or fighter attacks, a unit present in the city will shoot at you. You will also damage that unit with your attack.

In other words, the game model assumes that you want to do a strat attack against a defended city/resource if you are using a strat bomber. It thinks you want to do a tacair attack against the unit if you are using a fighter/tacair.

2. This depends on your objective per number 1.

3. I think fighters use oil no matter whether they are intercepting a unit in the same or a different hex. They definitely use oil to intercept an attack on a different hex.

As for the comment about putting a fighter in a city/resource to limit the attacks, that is correct. It may seem gamey, but I actually believe that the modders designed it to work this way with the idea that it makes a fighter defense more valuable as a way of disrupting strat bombers. So I think it a very intentional design feature. Strat is otherwise (by intention, I believe) a little overpowered so this helps balance it while encouraging defensive use of air.

I agree. In fact, FTR defence of oil fields would be pointless without this feature and it's already not very economical at times. Air units are heavily abstracted in general - much more than land units, I think. Air range, pilot training etc. are not really working realistically, but the game has its limits, so...
