Compass Object

Post by Richcat »

From new Eastern Front forum
Please add a new "object" that displays a simple Compass Rose... Basically, just a cross with an arrowpoint on north, and N, E, S and W written at each of the points... So map authors can drop one in at one of the corners...

Hi GL88 Compass Object attached to use on maps.
Zip contains 4sf file and compass dds
Extract them first then copy 2 individual files into an Object file in one of the campaigns in C:\My Documents\My Games.
Do Not put them in the main program Slitherine files on C drive.(This is a note for others trying this).
It should then appear in the editor for that campaign for placing on any map- they can be place any were on map, use R to rotate when placing.(this only rotates it 90 degrees at a time).
Strangely, it does not same to make any difference if you add in "[Compass]" to Object .TXT file.

I have raised it slightly and can make it smaller or larger if required or do you want one that is 45 degrees to the grid.

WOW... Richcat, this is totally awesome... Thank you... I've just tried it in our GJS'44 Caen...

Please may I ask two favours (only if you have time, because your compass rose is already amazing).

1. Could you make it large enough to fill 2x2 map squares? With bold text on the N, E, S, W
2. Could you make the white/silver arms a yellow-golden colour instead?

I've created a Richcat Objects folder for this, which I'm copying out over all of our D-Day maps -> viewtopic.php?f=87&t=38844&p=368246#p368246

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Just want to note that we are working on an integrated compass for the game right at this moment. So any ideas you may have could help Andrew work out his approach to this.

Cheers

Hi Pip an integrated compass would be even better, could be turned on and off like the mini map, or could it be build in part of the viewing screen so it would be visible at any time. Could be more like real metal like effect with water dds.
Cheers

It was from this cool mod on this thread, Secrets of the Reich - WIP by Guy called TopoSolitario viewtopic.php?f=104&t=21073
He also did this really cool "The two main guns trick!" viewtopic.php?f=104&t=21174, at the end of which there is something about tracers, and another mention of a particle editor- Pip is that by any chance on your list to do?
I don't think he actually posted the final one, but I could be wrong - this was from the first link "testing scenario", I just found it on an old back disc of mine.
But the links on the thread don't work since Megaupload was taken down.

Just wondering GL88 did you ever come across this mod by Merr viewtopic.php?f=105&t=25743, with Paradrop drop bonus and capture Field Observation Post to activate Artillery Bonus.

Hi Richcat, Thanks for the large gold version...

For some reason, it's not looking like yours in my Editor... Screenshot below...

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Its not finding the compassgold.dds file, and its doing it for both small and large, you can also get this if using the "destroyed" option O when pasting in place.
I don't think I changed anything from the original small one, which worked for you - I'll check.
In the meantime, try shutting download and loading up Ba again - see if that works, it might be able to then find the dds file.

DOH!! You are, of course, quite right...
My slippy fingers missed the .dds file when copying the folder contents over... It works great now...
Richcat's large golden cross is an awesome addition to BA!
Thank you Sir.

Just to inform that there is a function in Fortified Line that shows, in each border of the map, its compass points name.

The function must be called in the PreBattleSetup()
PlaceCompass (0); //the parameter indicates where is the North edge of the map.

The compass points name, i.e. North, South, etc. are placed exactly at the middle of each edge.
The function will work on any scenario if called as stated above.

Gracias Enric,

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea... I tried something similar, putting text labels "Northeast", "Northwest", "Southeast", "Southwest", in each corner of our GJS'44 maps... but I much prefer Richcat's solution... because it integrates perfectly with the rich graphical experience of BA...

I definitely need to take a good look at your Fortified Line code over the weekend. Sounds like there's a lot of really good stuff in there...

Thanks guys. Keep up the great work, E!

Hi GL88, I just noticed on a post of a recent image Image
where the compass object (top left) is in masked area it can't find the graphics texture again as its looking for another variation.
To make it appear correctly at all times you need to retain the original compassgold.dds file create a copy of it and re name it compassgold_M.dds
Cheers

Hey Richcat, I was wondering why the compass did that, but I didn't want to trouble you with such a small thing. As instructed, I copied .dds and renamed the new copy as an _M.dds version and it works a treat. I needed to do the same for damaged objects using the Merr technique too, so your fix is great.

Thanks VERY much!
