Winter Modification
I have modded the game to increase the penalty for the attacker during winter from .7 to .5.
IMHO, there was entirely too much action during the winter for a Great War simulation. There were not many winter offensives in the war. The fighting in the East during the winter of 1914-1915 was indecisive, the Germans and Austrians suffered heavy casualties, and such actions were not repeated. The Germans stopped attacked near Ypres when winter weather arrived. Hence the Christmas Truce!
At .5 things do really slow down when the snow hits, as they should.
I am sure that this affects play balance, but I am not sure exactly how as yet. I think it slows down the Germans since they are the ones on the offensive in 1914 and 1915. But it probably helps the Germans in subsequent winters in the West, while slowing them down in the East. Hell, I was reaching Petrograd late in 1916.

Re: Winter Modification
How difficult would it be to mod longer winters in eastern Europe/Russia and in the mountainous regions too (e.g. Italian/Austrian border, Caucasus)? Also, to vary winter onset date and length of winters (1916/7 was a really bad winter).
I know nothing about modding. If I were to introduce your modifications into my version then what happens? Do all the games that I host use the modified values and all the games that my opponents host use the official values? Is it possible for me to turn off the modified values if I don't want to use them in a particular game? Thanks.

Re: Winter Modification
That would be nice, and I'm looking at the text. But I doubt that I have the know-how to manage it. I know how to change the start and end dates, I think. But varying it by region, or randomizing it, is another story.
Re: Winter Modification
Text is found in the Lang folder, in english.txt
Re: Winter Modification
Yup think winter needs to be a bigger brake on operations

Re: Winter Modification
Good idea!majpalmer wrote:I have modded the game to increase the penalty for the attacker during winter from .7 to .5.
How do you do that?

Re: Winter Modification
Go to the directory where you installed the game. Go to Commander the Great War\Data\Scripts. Open the file "Game" in Notepad. Go to Line 15--"gameplay.wintercombatpenaltyattacker = 0.7". Edit the "0.7" to read "0.5". Go up to "File" and hit save.
Be careful not to add any spacing or returns.
That's it.

Re: Winter Modification
Can somebody answer the first of these two questions of mine from earlier in the thread please? I assume that once you modify the game then there is no "switch-off" facility but you would have to go back in and re-edit the game to its original state. Thanks.stockwellpete wrote:I know nothing about modding. If I were to introduce your modifications into my version then what happens? Re: Winter Modification
Make a copy of the file and move the copy to your desktop.
Edit the copy in Notepad.
Rename the original file, in place, to something like "unitorg".
Copy the edited file from the desktop back to the original location.
If you want to switch back all you have to do is to delete the edited file and rename the original file back to the original name.

Re: Winter Modification
Thanks very much for that. I shall wait for the first patch and see what's on that first but then I may use some of your ideas too - particularly the winter one.majpalmer wrote:Make a copy of the file and move the copy to your desktop.

Re: Winter Modification
Would I be able to detect in a multiplayer hosted game if my opponent was using mof files and I am not?
Re: Winter Modification
I'll second a request for clarity on using a modded game in MP - however, if the devs were to take up the good suggestions in the forum that'd be even better
