Hello Razz1, I might be able to answer part of your question, because you basically want to know three things, if I read your post correctly: first of all, was it possible to use the gun this way, secondly, was it ever used like that, and thirdly how common was this use as an artillery piece. Information in links is very fragmented, so no direct links, I'm sorry. You can google for '17-pdr indirect' or similar, if you want to research for yourself. OK, lecture time, I'll list some ingredients first:

It had an HE shell, not the most effective for its caliber, and the gun was equipped with a sight calibrated for this round, and it was equipped to fire indirectly, but the main limitation was lack of good elevation, the 17-pdr gun (towed) had a maximum elevation of 16.5 degrees. Which is something like this:

Image

Not good for long range or indirect fire. But, given some time, the crew could dig out a pit under the rear end of the gun to lower it, and voilá, more elevation. Just use the (in)clinometer which I believe was standard with the indirect sight, load up the HE and you have an artillery piece, but not a good one. The next pictures showing it firing indirectly are from the Korean war, but this technique was common knowledge.

Note that the technique may have been common knowledge, how often it was practiced was a different matter. In theory any gun can fire indirectly, I even saw pictures of Sherman Fireflies firing indirectly (the usual trick to get tanks to achieve more elevation is to use a ramp, still in use today). Main problems are lack of adequate sights and lack of training. I have no idea how often this technique was used, but it is the same discussion as with the anti-aircraft guns firing against ground targets or if the StuG's were used in the indirect fire role: I can easily find examples to show it was possible, but how common is a different question. I suspect it was rare in this case, a lot more common was artillery (25-pdr) in direct fire roles against tanks and bunkers.

Will the Germans have direct fire for their 15cm artillery soon?

4Key: If you need a direct fire icon for the 15cm sFh 18, I will put it in my "to do" list... :-)

ThvN: Good research, I think I have to remake the 17 pdr Arty icon... I gave its barrel something like 20 degrees elevation, which looks excessive!

Indeed, they were only some pixels missing, but they made the icon to look so weird... Thanks!!

Cammel... Indeed, the equipment and efx files would be the same that were included with the v1.01 pack because I did not update those files yet... in case you did noty downloaded the old pack, tell me and I will include them in the new pack. But for the time being they would be the same files as in the v1.01

Ok, I edited the posts about the Nashorn and the 17 pounder gun. I replaced the icon images for the ones with their correct barrel elevation. I think they look much better now.

Hi Airborne! Glad to hear from you after so much time! The work is being done, but at a slower rate than desired... Have some "real life work" at home... But things will be getting faster soon!

Making honor to the title of the present thread... I would like to share an idea I had concerning recon units and trying to make them more survivable in the battlefield. I was reading in the GC Unit Revisions thread sometime ago, that to avoid those recon units be killed with one shot from a tank unit, thay are classed as soft targets... So tanks will not kill them so easyly because they have lower SA values than HA values, but this way they are more vulnerable to artillery fire (which is less numerous in the battlefield). But the problem for me with this solution is that in general, recon vehicles are armoured to protect its crew and equipment from small arms fire and shell splinters, so definitely should be classed as "hard" targets...

What I thought is making recon units switchable between two "states". When switched to the recon mode its values for GD (and maybe Close Defense, Air defense also) can be made higher and to counterbalance their SA and HA values should be turned into negatibve numbers (they will fire only if attacked by enemy units). This can model the procedure in a recon mission when the vehicle is not exposing itself by getting closer to the enemy and/or fire its weapons at it, but being carefully moving and using defilade and hull down positions to observe the enemy units. When switched to the "combat" mode, its defense and attack values will go to normal ones and the unit could be used to attack the enemy. The unit could be classed as recon for its two "states" or, alternatively, as "recon" when in a recon mission, ans as "tank" when being used in combat mode, not having in this case the phased movement ability.
Thinking a little more about it, the Initiative and movement values could be also tweaked when in "recon" mode to make those units more useful. I think is an idea that deserves to be tested.

Just an idea for my Multipurpose Units Mod (in project)... but one I thought is good to share with everyone here.

Well, as the new v1.13 patch and the GC 45 West are out, and they include some "what-if" or, as sometimes are called "Luftwaffe 1946" units... I had the idea of making a new unit in this category. Here is the DFS 346, which was in construction in Geramny at war's end. It was later captured and flown by the Soviets. I think it was a rocket propelled supersonic research aircraft, but in this "what-if" scenario, I think it could have been converted in a high altitude recon aircraft, just adding some downward looking cameras somewhere inside the lower fuselage.
In this case, this unit would have been a very fast one, with relatively short range (it could glide back to base, because it could reach very high altitudes, adding to its operational range, but anyway the rocket engines had little endurance, so its in-game fuel value would be a medium to low value), and very high GD and AA stats, because of it being very difficult to intercept by fighters or reached by AA fire. Its spotting value would be high, and of course, no Air or Ground Attack capability.

This unit was made cutting and pasting a lot from the Me-262 icon, I hope you like it!
Have fun!
